Im looking to buy my first Toyota pickup and struggling to decide whether I should look for the 3rz or settle with the 22re. I’ve don’t quite a bit of research and from what I read both are good but 3rz has better power and about same mpg. Mpg is a big factor for me because it would be a daily and where I live everything is far away. Also read that the 3rz is easier to work on. I’m 17 y/o and need something good on gas reliable and easy to work on. Thanks for any feedback!

The 22RE is old tech. It hasn't been made for about 30 years. Your choice.

3RZ all day long. Just make sure the valve clearances have been checked regularly and there isn’t much else to go wrong.

I had a single cab 22re 5 speed while it truly is bulletproof it’s slower than molasses I also I had the 3rz single cab 5 speed that was a little better I currently have the 2trfe single cab 5 speed and this one is the fastest out of all of them

keep in mind almost no mechanic will want to touch the 22re if you ever need one. I live in SoCal so plenty of Toyotas here but when I called for a mechanic no one wanted to touch it since it was pre obd2

Then buying a truck will never be optimum.

There are lots of reliable choices out there with significantly better MPG

Sounds like you should look for a 3RZ, but don’t pass up a great deal on a solid 22RE.

Your best deal is a solid truck, not just a solid engine.
