Curious if anyone knew anything about the reasoning behind the shape of the crush washer that goes on the supply line to the fuel rail on a 3rz. Not sure if the same washer is used on the 5vz

This is what the OEM one looks like
    upload_2023-1-15_23-23-31.jpg

Is it okay to just use a regular copper crush washer in that spot instead?

    upload_2023-1-15_23-25-3.jpg

I can't really see any reason as to why it's shaped like that on the fuel rail or bolt, or anything in that connection.

No idea try and see you will know when cranking if it leaks.

Is it a odd ball fitting that needs a special crush washer to seal.

FWIW, these are the ones called for on the 5VZ-FE. Sold in packs of 10, 6 are required for servicing the fuel rails.

For the record, I found out why that sealing washer is shaped the way it is.

I was told that the triangular cutout is there to help center the washer onto the banjo bolt. And that when using aftermarket washers, to make sure it's as close to the diameter of the bolt as possible. To ensure that the washer doesn't squish out on one side more than the other.

so which ones did you end up going with? Oem or copper? And what engine are you working on? I’m rebuilding my 2.7 now and need to know how many there are total.

Mine 3rz I bought a bag of those in #3....

looks to be 6 if you do em all

    23901-75031__98247.jpg

5vz has to have 4 more to pig back the two rails at the front

And yes you'd want to carefully center them......
....you'll know real quick if you fudge it up....real quick

These come from the factory way over torqued...with a new fresh washer you dont need that much.........if you are lucky enough to have the truck long enough you'll eventually have to get into that fuel rail again...
most important part is get new fresh copper ones.....not 10yr old ones out of a toolbox

On all the other double flare connections I stuck in cheaters

cup washers I had to order from Autozone

    cupwasher.jpg

made cinching down all those other connections a breeze and safer

these are on the fender.....one at the rear tank

Dont think it matters....both will work

like I said I just bought a ten pack of the others.......

those cup washers are only for the double flares thru out the vechicle
those will not work on the banjo bolts

sorry for confusion....too much too quick I digress....

You should also keep a couple extra of the rear diff crush washers..
and a pack of oil drain plug washers

Rarely buy from the high $ national shops......high prices/high shipping

usually find on ebay or amozone

those cup washer were hard to find out side of HVAC suppliers

I know zero people that use the triangle ones.... think I've never seen one come off an old toyota..

but if you're gonna put an order in anyways.....I see no harm/no foul.....
    just dont think its necessary..

I've got maybe 200K all together in toyotas with the plain round ones...
    never had a leak....

Its the injectors that have given me woe in the past

its easy to get a leak there .....or around the injector cups

all the injectors/o-rings have to come out perfect level on the rail

....again immediately will know something is wrong...

yeah I got new cups and o rings and stuff for the injectors. I replaced my injectors like a year ago so they are good.

A light and I mean light coat of oil will help seat those crush washers. My fuel rail and fuel filter replacements were OEM crush washers and round from Toyota. Never saw the triangle type before.

I've had success with the regular copper circular ones from an auto parts store on the fuel rail and filter lines. Even reusing them a couple times.

Pro-tip for reusing the coppers is to lightly preheat them with a torch to get them to sort of "spring back" to their non compressed state. Ymmv though.
