Hello, anyone know if this is possible to use a 3rz ecu in a 2rz safely? I can’t find a 2rz ecu for my year that isn’t crazy pricing 1995-1997 with distributor. I have a 3rz ECU for the same year with distributor in it now. plugged right in. seems to run fine idle fine just pops on deceleration also no codes. It is running timing advanced from the live data if i remember correctly it was advanced 15degrees and advanced 30 degrees revving at 3000. I can’t find any ecu tune specs for either ecu so i don’t how different the ecu are. I’m not driving the truck till i know more about the differences in ECUS. I was hoping to be able to bore out the distributor bolt to allow alittle adjusting and retard the timing alittle to compensate? Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Thanks Lila! I know I’ve just been trying to wait to find one for $100-$200 haha

I’m hoping someone might have the ecu programmed specs so I can compare and know or not if it’s safe and okay to run with alittle adjusting or if the ecu will adjust it self overtime.

It runs fine revs all the way i just don’t wanna drive it cause the stroke difference might burn up the valves I’m thinking

It's a different engine, so no, not really.

As Dog said, spend the money on the correct ECU.

Might troll some wrecking yards for one...

Unfortunately 1st gen ECUs aren't tunable and the aftermarket custom tunable ECUs run over $1,500

The fact it even starts is mind boggling .

In theory swapping the2 RZ into thinking it is a 3RZ might be possible.

It would take time sitting down and looking at the pin outs and EWD`s from both engines.

To me getting the correct ECM would be much cheaper till it was all done. If I was billing someone for the job.

Thanks for the reply Wyoming09 yes ecu does work fine in the 2rz harness in just worried about a very minor pop on deceleration. Anyone else would be driving like nothing ever happened has lots of power. I was just hoping someone would know the specs on the ecu programming so I could look it over and rest my mind I’m not damaging my newly rebuild engine.

I’m thinking a very small adjustment turn on the distributor will be the key to make it run perfectly fine I think I will try and see how it goes

Dwell is the key with points and distributor ignition system.
    Have you checked the Dwell?

Why do I have a first gen 99 Tacoma with a 2.7 and a 2rz fe brain that ran fine no issues until it didn't wanna idle... it'll start but it does right after, things changed are alternator spark plugs, radiator, fuel pump and filter, maf, tps, cleaned throttle body and the iac, now my truck's not doing any codes but it still won't idle like I can't even drive it anywhere I'm close to setting it a blaze at 238,000 Help me please

For us in Hawaii it’s incredibly difficult to get used Tacoma parts, no yards have them because all the cousins and family friends are circling like vultures when one wrecks or ect lol.

Will keep an eye out on Maui for you

I bought a 98 with 2rz brain factory in it......
.......they(who) stuck a 3rz engine in that same truck.....
its ran fine for years.....no problems.....

only rule I've seen......cant mix the MT ecm and the AT ones....
however 3rz and 2rz are interchangeable......at least the AT ones.....thats my experience.....

However the injectors are different.....the oem 3rz came with the pink ones(many tiny holes)....
.....2rz came with the dark blue ones (2 big holes).....denso's...........

I bought a backup few years ago when you almost could give 5 lug parts away....
like $40.....insurance....probably never need it then....

These ecms can go bad or wear out........
.....usally its a no start......when everything else on earth has been tried....

I would keep posting in Gen1 classifieds here.......at people have these truck sitting around....

.......use to be when you bought a salvage engine they gave you the ecm out of that truck.....so a few just gathering dust ......somewhere....

I always carry a backup under pass seat......takes less than 15min to switch out if done it before.......

And if I only had a dollar when someone blamed some failure on the ecm....
.....replacing the ecm.....and that not being it....

yota's only like and get along with oem factory engine sensors.....
and not the the knock offs on ebay for 1/10 stealership's price....
just because it comes in a toyota box....doesnt mean shittt......
