So here’s where I’m at and I’m looking for some thoughts from other people before I decide. So here soon I’m planning to do a new timing (truck has 330k with no knowledge of when it was last done), with that said I have been considering deleting the balance shaft while already messing with the timing and having the front of the motor apart, I have heard a lot of back and forth controversy over wether it’s good, bad, worth it, worthless, and so here is my thought is if I delete it, it is one less thing to worry about creating a future problem, aka spinning a bearing /ruin block, counterbalance chain breaks, as well it is one less thing for the crank to drive. On the other hand I’m wondering if these are really reasons to even worry about or am I just creating reasons to make myself feel better. And how bad does the motor vibrations really get without the balances that are supposed to make them feel smoother. So honestly I’m looking for any opinions here, people who’ve done it, people who haven’t for a reason, physicists who graduated from Harvard, anyone. Anything is greatly appreciated.

I hear about people deleting them on racing engines. They sometimes say it was worth doing.

BUMP/ a question on 3rz valve adjustment, as stated earlier in the thread I'm planning to do my timing and I also have been thinking about adjusting my valves, so my question is since I will have the timing chain off could I replace my out of spec valve shims by just pulling off my cams and throwing the new shims in. My thought is that it would be easier than using the special tool to compress the bucket/spring and pulling the shim out that way. Or would it be a safer bet/easier using the tool and leaving the cams installed? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

As I get older I approach these things differently. Some Japanese engineer went through a lot of trouble designing and implementing that system. I now try to leave things unmolested.

I've always thought the valve clearances may change just a bit by pulling cams after taking measurements but some engines require that procedure. (shim UNDER bucket)

So you guys think it’d be best for me to leave the cams and just replace the shims using the tool?
