I believe the height of the rails are different among the two but I could be wrong.

Front of the bed is different, different height for front rail. Would have to get a seal if you cared
    Tailgate is substantially different

I'll bet you're closer to making a Gen 3 tonneau fit on a Gen 2 than you realize, @HGPineapple. They're not going to be a direct fit. But with some clever mods and a bit of fabricating it can probably be done.

I did it, in fact. Sort of. I mounted the Mountain Top tonneau from my Gen 1 truck on my Gen 2. It took a bit of work, but the results are surprisingly good. Those aluminum checkperlate tonneaux from Denmark's Mountain Top Industries are kind of rare and I'm very happy to have it in use (as the Gen 1 truck is running an ARE canopy now).

Key to my project -- critical, in fact -- were the aluminum bed rails from KB Voodoo. Replacing the silly OEM plastic bed rails that make the Gen 2 beds different heights on the sides compared to the front and back with the thinner KB Voodoo rails made everything "flat" within a couple of millimeters and let the tonneau's rubber perimeter seal fit tight.

The Gen 2 and Gen 3 SMC (sheet molding compound) composite inner beds are exactly the same, as are the C-channel sections (as far as I can tell). The front rails should be completely compatible. The key thing is leveling the sides.

    A few pix:

Tonneau test-fitted onto OEM bedside rails. Note the significant gap across the tailgate. The same gap was across the front (although the details of the Mountain Top mounting system make it less of a problem there.)

KB Voodoo bed rail in place.

Tonneau installed. It's been this way for three years or so now and I love it.

I just got back from a 6000 mile winter camping trip with my RTT mounted on the tonneau. Worked perfectly.
