A while back, I'd replaced my truck's stock head unit with the Joying US-JY-TO160N4GS-1. I'd wanted a way to retain the use of the OEM overhead mic so I spent a bit of time with my multimeter and reviewing wiring diagrams to come up with a prototype adapter. A revision or two later and the end result of that is the https://tombit.com/product/3rd-gen-toyota-tacoma-mic-adapter-atc-ato-fuse-type.

This adapter provides a complete plug-and-play solution for retaining use of the overhead OEM factory microphone with an aftermarket head unit. It does NOT require cutting into/modifying any factory wiring harnesses. There's no need to remove the overhead console assembly or fish wires as the adapter is installed inline with the head unit. If you ever need to re-install the factory OEM head unit, the adapter installation is completely reversible and leaves no trace.

I've included some installation instructions/pictures on the product listing page I linked to above.

I'm happy to report that I've been running the production version of this adapter in my own truck since October of 2020 and have been extremely pleased with the results. I have a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off Road and can say with confidence that this adapter works with the 2016, 2017 and 2018 years of Tacoma trucks (I've not had the opportunity to test the adapter with later model years of the truck.)

I've done an initial board run for these and am currently working to get the adapters assembled. Once completed, I'll make them available for purchase at the link above (I currently have it set as "Out of Stock" until I have a chance to complete the first batch.) I'll drop a note in here to give folks a heads up.

    Thanks,
    Tom

highly interested... see you're out of stock. Hopefully the first round of adopters will chime in with their success story?

I've been needing to get behind my after market head unit anyways as I have a rare but intermittent reset happening and probably need to resolder some wires.

    thanks!

That’s awesome. I was hoping someone would come up with something like this.

Yeah I'm switching out this 2010 in a 2019 radio this summer. I'll need this.

This is really nice to have. I installed a new Kenwood head unit last fall and didn't realize all the adapters needed to retain the use of the factory GPS, Sirius XM antenna and the like. I ended up running a new microphone up to the OEM location and disconnected the original. It seems to work okay, but this would definitely be a better fit. Nice work!

Wanted to get folks an update - I've finished assembling the PCBs, drilling the enclosures and readying the add-a-fuse and ground lug connectors. At this point, I'm in the final stages of assembling the adapters. I'll post an update here once final assembly has been completed and I'm ready to throw the switch on the site from Out of Stock to Available.

Just another quick update - Final assembly/testing is coming along. Below are some pictures of the units that are finished and production ready. I've got ~10 more to go (in addition to what's already been assembled) for this first batch, which I hope to have assembled/tested sometime this weekend. Once again, I'll post an update once I'm ready to throw the switch from Out of Stock to Available.

For those folks who have reached out directly in email/via the Contact Us page on my site, my apologies for the delay in responding to you. This is a side project and not my full-time gig and most of the time I've had available outside of my M-F/8-5 job has been spent assembling these and getting other things in order for these adapters. The demand kind of caught me off guard so while I've been working to get these assembled/tested, I've also been working on the procurement side to ensure I've got more PCBs, harnesses, cases, etc. in the pipeline so I can continue production beyond this first batch. Thank you all for your patience!

    -Tom

The work here is impressive both engineering-wise and build-wise. I worry that the price point equates to below minimum wage if you add up all your time? But maybe that's fine with you?

Are you hand crimping those T's?

    Looking good!

The best thing I did for the 2LM harnesses was contract someone else to do them. They are better quality and cheaper than I could have done them myself. It also didn't suck up nearly as much time although packing and shipping still takes a bit.

Hoping I can snag one of these to install an Android head unit in my truck. I'm not sure if it will have the same fuse as you have planned for, but I assume I can just cut that off and get power from somewhere else?

Yeah, if I buy one (at this price I don't see how I can not buy) I was thinking I'd use the remote output turn on or maybe go direct to my 8 circuit switched fuse block.

I like OP's plan to use add-a-fuse, it's certainly thorough and detailed and efficient for many.

Curious on power draw but that should be easy to measure.
