Anyone have any idea what company makes a programmer for our trucks? Seems like everyone makes it for the 2nd gen 4.0L engine but not ours.

Any thoughts? Just trying to get better mpg if I can, kind of a newbie question. I know everyone has their opinion on programmers but I wouldn't mind getting an extra couple mpg on the highway.

Yeah I had one on my f150 and I did get noticeable better mpg when needed and better towing when needed just by switching tunes. So I don't think it's a bad idea for long highway drives that I save some gas, then really turn it up when I'm on the trail. I would rather invest in a programmer.. than a exhaust or something . Etc. just my .02

There are tuning solutions available for the 3rd generation Tacoma ECU, but they're targeted at professional tuners.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone eventually released a stand-alone unit that flashed a pre-determined map on to the ECU, but those generally aren't worth your money. You'd be better off paying a professional to properly tune your individual vehicle on a dyno.

I sent an inquiry to BullyDog about 6 weeks ago and they said something is in the works. It will most likely be a new platform they said as opposed to using the Toyota GT tuner which is out for the 2nd gens.

From my experience with them on Tundras, they may be slow to market but once they commit to a project they come through.

boosts power, torque, mpg, truck and driver sexiness, and gives you a bigger dick. or makes you a bigger dick. one of the 2. tend to think the latter since its"The Only Chip CUSTOM PROGRAMMED for Your Vehicle!" except it magically works on all gen and engine tacomas.

well thats almost as foolish a statement as the ad for the power chip. because its NA, it doesnt flow air, inject gas(12 injectors!?!?!) have timing or anything of that nature huh? funny because that same engine in another factory tune makes 305hp(gs350) but that gain was likely from increasing the torque spec of the muffler bearings, right?

Bullydog is well known for there diesel truck programmers etc, have been getting big with the gassers of late also. If i was gonna get a chip the bullydog would be my #1 choice! Had one in my 05 dirtymaxx and worked very well.

For anyone considering buying an ebay tuner. Have a look at the mighty car mods episode on the subject. TOTAL waste of money.

well they call it a 2gr-fks just like they do the v6 in the tacoma soo... yes. except tuned less for low end torque and more for higher rpm HP. and requires premium fuel.

    Do you know which ones?
I had contacted my old Honda tuner (Evans tuning in PA, well respected in the import scene) He said he didnt know of anything commercially available for 3rd gen tacomas besides a dealer reflash, and I know he tunes AEM, Haltech, Motec, Hondata etc.

Reflashing the stock ecu is usually best these days because you retain OBD2 for inspection etc, unless you need more capability for a true track vehicle or something.

Like you said Dyno tuning is the way to go for best results, I would never use some generic mailorder tune.

Taking this in a slightly different direction.......are there any tuners/programmers that can change functional things on the truck? On my Audi, I used VAGCOM to enable opening and closing of windows and sunroof with the remote, needle sweep on start up, changed the warning chime and a few other things. Not sure if this is even possible on Toyota.
