3rd Gen Style 7/4 Pin Trailer Plug DIY

I’m in the process of fixing a buncha little random things on my truck….

Like most Tacomas, my 7 pin plug is pretty beat up and damaged.

Since I’m replacing it, I might as well upgrade it too.

3rd gens come with a 7 pin / 4 pin combo (see below)



Has anyone updated their 7 pin to this new style plug?

I’d like to relocate it up to the bumper right next to the plate like I see people do with the 7 pins.

I’m assuming the 2nd gen male plug isn’t the same as the 3rd gen plug just because.

Id rather not have to cut/splice the OEM hardness, but I don’t mind having to depin/repin.

Id love to get any input from anyone who’s done this/thought about doing this.

I’m sure it can be done. Seems pretty straight forward, just have to figure out where to mount it. Ask the 3rd gen forum for a pic of the harness.

 

Would you need a converter box for the 4wire? The older trucks would always need a 5 to 4 wire converter for the tail/brake lights to work properly. Might be wiring in a separate harness to make that work.

 

I too went down this rabbit hole and ended up just bailing on the idea as it wasn't immediately important. Your best bet will be to use an aftermarket 4/7 pin combo connector rather than the OEM one. The G2 and G3 Tacoma wiring for the trailer wiring use completely different style connectors and different wires/pins as well so you can't just easily re-pin it. You'll want to get generic, aftermarket parts then cut/splice into your existing wiring.

There may be something out there but after weeks of searching for a plug n play solution I gave up.

I’m essentially wanting to do the exact same thing that you tried doing.

I actually ordered one of the Hopkins 7/4 plugs with the pigtail.

Im gonna try to gut the terminals out of it and crimp em onto the OEM harness to make it plug and play.

 

Welp, here’s my solution.

Purchased the Hopkins 41144.

It’s a 7/4 pin combo that looks similar to the 3rd gen unit.

I started by taking notes.



Then I dissected the factory harness/plug and depinned it.





Then I took the Hopkins plug and depinned it as well.





Then I removed the pins/seals from the Toyota harness.



And stripped the ends.



Then I stripped the pins/seals off the Hopkins harness.



I opened the pins back up and crimped them onto the Toyota harness after adding the Hopkins seals to it.



I added a bit of solder just to be sure.



Then I matched the Toyota wiring up to the Hopkins plug and repinned it.





Now the aftermarket 7/4 pin trailer plug will plug into the factory harness.







I just need to mount somewhere now.
