So after long consideration between aftermarkets, 3rd gen TRD rims and 3rd gen TRD sport rims, I decided to go with the 3rd gen TRD OD rims. Then, the search was on to find some reasonably priced takeoffs near me. After looking for weeks, I found a deal on Craigslist about an hour and half from me. $460 for the tires and rims. Tires are a little worn, but will be replaced when completely worn. So no biggie.

To silence all rumors, 3rd gen rims fit on first gens with no problem. Not only do they fit, but they look sweet on them. Look like aftermarkets to me. The back spacing is different, so spacers will be needed to go any wider, but these are 265/75r16 and they fit perfect.

Let me know what y'all think.

Hey there! this looks great. I just picked up a set of the same rims to put on my 1st gen. Were you able to use the 1st gen lug nuts or did your wheels come with the 3rd gen lugs?

    Thank you!

I got the lugs from the seller of the 2016 sport rims and used them. No spacers. Don't know if the original lugs would have worked - didn't try them. I really like the way my truck looks with the sport wheels, looks updated OEM to me.

Love the look. Those off road wheels are exactly what I'm looking for. Do you know the exact back spacing and offset on them?

I put 200 miles on my stock TRDOR wheels and they went on CL. Didn't know it looks soo good on the first gen.

I know it’s an old thread but just got my 3rd gen mounted with Goodyear wranglers, not sure if it’s stock but they are bigger in overall size than my 31x10.5x15

Hmmm.... I have the stock 15" wheels on my 99 Prerunner. Do the 17' wheels change the Speedo or the odometer?

Wheel size won’t. Tire size will.

I’ve seen a couple first gen trucks with third gen wheels. Looks great imo.

So If the overall height is higher than the stock, then it will be off, right? Is there any way to compensate for the difference?

Yep. Probably going to do it electronically. I’ve never owned a 1st gen so I’m not too helpful! Sorry!

This is for anyone looking at this wondering if they can do this to their Taco and what to expect.

Not the best photo but hopefully it helps. 2004 Tacoma with 3rd gen rims and 265 75 r16 bfg ko2’s which by the way are wicked good tires in my opinion. Overall they fit really well but the front does rub a little. When the front wheels are just about full lock (turn) there is minor rubbing on the Upper control arm because 3rd gen rims suck in the wheels a little bit. With an inch spacer all should be good which I’m gonna be doing when my lift comes in.
    upload_2020-10-28_9-59-32.jpg
Overall it was worth doing it because the rims go well with the truck and they fit well for the most part. These tires do fill up the whee wells quite a bit but with a 2.5” front lift and 1” in the back all should be good (I have no rubbing on the fenders at all so a lift doesn’t have to be put on but taking a hard bump could rub a little)

They fit my '04 with stock suspension without rubbing and look sharp in my opinion. They come up for sale all the time around here for some reason.

3rd gen Trd off road rims look sharp on 1st gen tacos only thing is they suck the tires in and they rub on the frame when you take a sharp turn with large tires on so spacers are good to get
