So this started happening a few days ago on my 2017 Tacoma Limited.
Whenever I lock the truck, it obviously locks everything, including the tailgate. Well ever since the 7th, the tailgate has made a loud grinding noise when I lock it. It locks and unlocks as it should, just while making that sound. It is only when locking, both with the key and using the driver door switch. Any clue what might be happening?

Did you install a Pop & Lock or some other brand power tailgate lock? It does not come with one from the factory. Sounds like the actuator it starting to have issues.

    No, it's from factory.
And yea, it sounds like the motor keeps trying to lock for a second even after it has already done the job.

P.S. I am new to this kind of forum, so I'm still learning how to reply/quote/etc.

I am the original owner, bought it from the dealership with the lock on it. My truck is the Limited trim, so maybe that has something to do with it?

    Dealer add-on most likely.

I agree with @Boghog1 pull the tailgate cover and take a look, very easy to do.

I'll check it out when I can, buy the actuator, and come back with results. Thanks for your help.

I appreciate it! From the outside it looks like factory, so I never knew.. I'll open it up to look at it and see what's up.

FYi the power tailgate lock was not a option till 2019 2020 years only and even that it had to be added by the dealer plug & play so yours must have been a aftermarket add on back then from the dealer witch Dealers do all the time They sometimes have a model here & there tricked out from aftermarket wheels & tires decals from a wrap shop so I bet that is what you have and if you talk to your dealer where you bought it from they would know & help you resolve the issue I am sure

Just wondering if you ever found out what the issue was and if you were able to resolve it? I just started having this same issue with my 2017 Tacoma Limited today. Thank you.

I was wondering if there was a video teaching how to replace and fix the power lock rattling on the tailgate? Thank you.
