This is relevant to all Tacomas but I want to hear about the 3rd gen guys!

How much should I worry about my gvwr? I was thinking about what upgrades I would like to do and had to remind myself of the payload capacity of a 4x4 AT DCSB off-road- 1175lbs. This is pretty dissapointing considering my 08 ridgeline had closer to 1500lbs of payload capacity. So, if I have 4 people in the cab at ~180lbs, then that means my payload is then 1175 - 4(180)=455 lbs of payload left
So if I add on a winch bumper, Rock sliders, fiberglass cap on back, and full skids- I would most likely meet that threshold. That's not including any other cargo I might have. I guess the easiest answer to my payload question would be to just buy a tundra- not gonna happen!

I guess I could upgrade the rear leaf springs and maybe upgrade the brakes to HPS pads and slotted and drilled rotors.

What have y'all done to compensate for your sub-par payload capacity?

Halftons don't have much more payload either. My '13 F150 is only like 1300lbs.

The general consensus is to pull a trailer. That 455lbs used for tongue weight would allow 4550lbs of trailer.

A set of airbags will help the truck hold the weight. I rarely know the actual weight of what I'm hauling or towing but use common sense and just do what you have to do. The truck will let you know when it's overloaded.

    That is a good idea.

I may just have to beef up suspension and braking before I start anything I guess

Pretty sure I'm over it.... on the bright side it resolved my squeaking leaf springs, howling rear diff, and driveline vibes.

hahahaha! So that works to fix all of those problems?

I had my truck loaded down with dudes, gear, and a kayak trailer with 5 kayaks, and I dont remember hearing the howling. I wish I paid more attention.

In my '15 Sport I hauled 1500 pounds a couple times, but I haven't pushed my '17 yet, but my assumption is I could do the same or close to. When I was having to bring gravel home from the local yard I would do half a ton each trip to be safe and I then drove 25 miles on freeway that way with no issues.

My rig is being built to overland mostly so the only thing I'm really doing is upgrading the suspension to help with weight. Brakes and trans should be fine imho

The truck felt a bit squirrely at 40mph with 1 ton in the back. Very sensitive to steering adjustment. Probably wouldn't do it again I'm sure it was not safe. No way I would have taken it on the freeway

I didn't want to take the freeway, but had no choice. Steering I did notice was sensitive I agree, but overall wasn't too bad.

I installed Timbren load assist bumpstops. I haul firewood year round and it was a big help. I am careful and use common sense when I haul, I dont accelerate hard, stop slowly, and avoid any sudden turning. It does pretty well with loads power wise with ECT its good. I also haul for Overland style trips and weight management is a priority to me.

What is the general consensus on this issue? I'm in the same boat - looking to add a bunch of stuff to my 2017 DCSB TRD Off-Road and came up with the following estimated figures:

    Front Bumper - 200 lbs
    Winch - 80 lbs
Additional Battery (for dual battery setup) - 80 lbs
Twin ARB compressor - 20 lbs
    Rear Bumper - 200 lbs
Go Fast Camper - 200 lbs
    Decked system - 220 lbs
Hi Lift Jack and various tools - 50 lbs
    Additional lighting - 40 lbs

That puts me at about 1090 lbs without passengers and various other gear that I would want to load up to take a trip (cooler, clothes, water, etc.). It looks like with this setup I would definitely be over the manufacturer's payload capacity. But looking at people's builds, this doesn't seem to be an uncommon setup. Should I be concerned?

I’m in the aviation industry, and while not exactly the same issue comparison, you can draw some parallels. If a pilot exceeds the aircraft manufacturers stated weights, or any other limits... we say that pilot has become a “test pilot”, and is now experimenting with conditions not demonstrated/approved for aircraft certification. One parallel example would be the braking distance is now unknown when weights are exceeded, as well as the equipment failure point (brakes/tires) is now unknown. If the aviation world, you’re risking many lives when you exceed an aircraft limitation... similarly, in regard to personal cars & trucks, one is risking harm to oneself, passengers, and other on-road vehicle occupants when exceeding car/truck limits.

I’m not sure why there is not much safety emphasis placed on non-commercial drivers/operators as few, if any, legal consequences seem to exist for those individuals who ignore personal conveyance limits... of course there are appropriate regulations and related fines for commercial operators who exceed such weight limitations on public highways. Final thought, there could be insurance coverage issues if an accident occurs, and the fault is discovered to be directly related to vehicle operation outside of the stated manufacturers limitations... but that is state controlled and may vary with negligence laws.

I guess I'm more surprised that this isn't emphasized more often (being over weight limits). I see lots of posts of totally decked out rigs, but no mention of weight capacity considerations associated with them. As I started to take a look at it and adding up all the items, I realized that it doesn't take much to hit that limit. :/
