So I have a line on a free OEM bedcover from a 2016. Has anyone been able to make the 3rd gen cover work on a 2nd gen truck?

I've heard the cover is slightly longer on the 3rd gen, I'm ok if it covers the tailgate as long as I can secure it to the bed. Does the 2nd gen have the same mounting points under the bed rail covers?

If this doesn't work, I'm not out anything in fact I'll sell it and get my gas money for the month! LOL..

    Thanks!

I don't know if this will help you but I just transferred a factory Toyota bed mat from a 2006 to a 2018 and it fit exactly the same. I also transferred an aftermarket tool box between the two vehicles and it also fit exactly the same.

I probably should have read your post instead of just the title, lol. Seems like a non-issue now.

hmm, i dont see why not, dimensions inside the bed are almost identical, the caps and tailgate are different but everything else is essentially the same. If its free and you want a cover, why not!!! Try it out and report back.

Interested to hear what you decide, Lgeekdws.

I've been considering an Undercover Ridgelander tonneau, which the company states is applicable to Gen 3 trucks. As far as I can tell, the sheet molding compound (SMC) inner bed on Gen 2 and Gen 3 trucks isn't just similar, it's identical. They differ in the mounting position of the front C-channel, the bed caps, and the hardware around the tailgate (where the greatest generational differences are found). Undercover's tech service has been little help. We're mostly on our own here.

I'm guessing that the front C-channel might be interchangeable from Gen 3 to Gen 2, which would raise the deck level to be somewhat equal to the side rails. The bed rail caps could perhaps be "leveled" by removing the plastic caps and installing KB Voodoo aluminum bed rail caps.

The tailgate area is an unknown, though -- this is where your findings will be useful. As there won't be many new products developed for our Gen 2 trucks, finding ways to adapt Gen 3 products would be a nice thing to know.

If it was one of the hard fiberglass tonneau covers from like snugtop that wraps over the bedsides id say no. But one of the covers that sits down inside the bed just above the rails, id bet it fits spot on.

OK guys a followup. Definitively, the 3rd gen will NOT fit on the 2nd gen truck. The size is right and the mounting pins would work if attached to the cargo rails, they would work to secure the cover BUT, the latches on the cover themselves are set 1/4' too wide to fit inside the bed rails. I'm not out anything but 20 miles of gas to pick it up. If anyone in Raleigh/ Durham/ Chapel Hill NC area is looking hit me up.

That sucks. The front part of the bed, where a tool box sits, are identical.

Can you grind a 1/4" off the latches? Or redrill the mounting holes in the latch assemblies?

Thanks for the update! Did you take any pix, Lgeekdws? It would be good to see exactly what you're seeing.

Not quite enough latch to grind, it would destroy them. It was dark when I was working on it and getting cold so I didn't take any pics.. Sorry!!

LOL.. I'm in NC, and I was able to get the cover in the hands of a deserving 3rd gen owner. Thanks anyway!
