I have a 2019 taco sport, along the line I came across a 3rd gen locking rear diff 3rd member for a great deal, I bought it, but wasn't sure if i would have to do any sort of modifications or is it a direct fit?

I’m not entirely sure here, but I think the controls for the locker are baked in to the rest of the ECU, and it’s not as simple an on/off voltage signal,,,,,but I could be wrong. It’d be cool if you can get it to work.

I would think you would need to wire it with a relay and a dedicated switch. Certainly not a drop in install, unless you are an electrical whiz.

If I were to go down the locker road, I would use an air or a mechanical locker.

Aside from the wiring issues, unless you have a manual trans, the rear end for the off road is larger. You’d probably need the entire axle.

AFAIK unless you have a manual trans you're gonna need the entire real axle. The 8.75" 3rd won't fit in an automatic non locked axle. Then there's getting everything wired up to work properly.

I'm not a locker expert others may have better info but why go through the trouble of trying to integrate the factory locker?

If you want an E-locker, I think Eaton makes a drop-in for the 8.0" sport rear. wire it independently and no need to make it play nice with the truck ECU or add diodes to make it work.

Yeah, might have to look into an air locker, it might be more of a headache to install the factory than to install a aftermarket

Sell it and use the profit for an air locker

How many times have you needed to lock the rear and not been able to? Most "Off Road" owners would get more use out of the scoop if they were honest with themselves.
Sell it and put the money toward something you'd actually use.

Was the one you purchased from an Auto or Manual as the gear ratios are different?

My scoop is functional, I put a light bar inside, have used it more than my 1st Gen Off Road with the locker, which I took to the beach often.

When I was trying to decide between the Sport and Off Road it came down to what gave me the most stuff for the $$$. For all practical purposes they cost about the same. One gave me locking rear diff and crawl control and one gave me a scoop. I don't plan on ever intentionally going off road and would only need the 4wd for some instances in the winter with snow or maybe some random fallen tree in the road. I'm positive I'm not alone here...

When I learned that the non-functional scoop added 3 extra HP (thanks friendly TW peeps) I got a little jealous.

I use mine,,, rarely, but I do use it.
Half this site can't put this truck in 4WD, without creating a new thread asking about a noise, did they ruin it, front tires hopping, etc. It gives this aging man, very little hope for our children's future.

When I purchased, the Sport also gave me a manual transmission (access cab) and was cheaper. Win/win.
If the OR AC was configured the same, then I may agree with more for the money even if I never used it.

I will never understand why Toyota doesn't offer the AC Off Road with a Manual Trans. Irritates me to no end...
