Hello everyone in Tacoma World. I have a simple question regarding the fuel filter location on my 3rd gen Tacoma. I'm guessing since I can not readily find the answer on google that its back inside the tank as in the 2nd generation. Thanks for any help everyone.

I am surprised no one has replied to your post. I think it is reasonable to assume that it is still in the tank. The engineers design these things with so much filtering capacity that they never need changing, unless you store your fuel in open 5 gallon buckets in the back yard that is.

    Welcome to Tacoma World.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere on this forum that it’s in the gas tank.

Snefo, thank you for the reply I figured it was there but wanted to confirm before I moved on to the next diagnostic step. I'm having a drivability issue which resembles a fuel starvation hesitation. It happens when in a high gear at highway speed or in town driving. If the throttle is pressed down just a bit to accelerate it begins to buck and hesitate until it downshifts. It seems to be getting worse I have checked and cleaned the mass air meter and looked for vacuum leaks. Thanks again

Do you have an auto or MT? May need to get tranny fluid level manually checked.

Got curious myself and just got off the phone with corporate parts research analysts and they said that it should only need to be replaced in the case of foul play, sand or sugar in the tank, etc. Looking at my diagrams it looks like that it's made into the hanger that the fuel pump mounts to in the tank as @snefo mentioned. This info would make sense considering that the fuel tanks are literally the same part number between the Gen 2 & 3.

It’s a 2016, many including mine were low on tranny fluid (mine was 2quarts low). I highly recommend getting the fluid manually checked first.

Crank position sensor maybe? Some have had issues with these. If that is the case, there is a fix. There is a TSB on this I believe.

I have heard that there was a safety recall on the crank or cam position sensor. I will look at the transmission fluid level and schedule a service with the dealer. Thanks for all the replies and help.

    Your fuel filter is fine.

If you mash the gas harder or shift manually, does the problem go away?

Has the trans ECU been updated? Isn't the truck still in warranty?

Once it downshifts it does goes away. I’m not sure if all the updates where done. I just bought the truck used from a ford dealer.

Just to clarify, the only fuel filtering in second and third generations is accomplished by the in tank pre-pump strainer? Can this be purchased separately from Toyota?
