As the title states, will a 3rd gen 4Runner steering wheel directly swap into a 1st gan Tacoma? I don't see why it wouldn't, but before I got to the trouble of pulling it off at pick-a-part I want to make sure it will. Mine looks like garbage so I want a new one.

Yep, it will. I've swapped 4runber steering wheels in both my 96 and 99 Tacoma.

My 96 is a base model 5lug and and the click spring didn't have enough wires in it for the cruise control switch. I had to track one down that had the correct number of wires. However, if your truck currently has cruise control, you should be good to go.

One other thing to remember is that 00 and older Tacomas and 4runners used a 3 wire cruise switch. 01+ used 2 wire. The switches are shaped different between 2 and 4 spoke wheels and thus, not interchangeable. However, a 3 wire switch from a 4 spoke wheel will go in place of a 2 wire switch on a 4 spoke wheel and visa versa

As best I can tell all 3rd gen 4runners and 98-04 Tacomas use the same clock spring, 95-97 have different airbag plugs and various numbers of wires in the clock spring.

What i have is an 02 I'm looking at suppling factory cruise control parts for it. I don't have access to it to check if original non factory CC truck clock spring will work.

When you have access to it, unbolt the airbag via one start bit screw on each side at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. Then the airbag should pop out (there are some white prongs that hold it in place that kinda pop in and out) the airbag harness is long enough to set the airbag on top of the steering wheel without unplugging it. Then there is a white plug directly above the steering wheel nut. Unplug it and see how many pins are inside the clock spring connector. You will need at least 3 for the for 01+. 2 for cruise and one for the horn.

What about putting a 2016 Tacoma steering wheel anybody heard of that? That may be a try to for me if I get my hands on one.

the wheel itself may fit but all the electronics and airbag wires would not match up. I for one would not try to rig wires dealing with the airbag.

Just curious I don't have airbags anyways. I have a full roll cage.
