I drive a 2011 taco and I want to replace my 32.5's with some 35 inch tires but I don't know if I should re-gear or not. Can someone give me some insight to whether I should or not? And what gear set I should go with.
    Thanks

I think most guys re-gear with 35s, not sure what gear ratio is ideal though

If I remember correctly, 4:10 is ideal for 33s, and 4:56 for 35s

I recently jumped from 305/70r16 to 315/75r16 and I can feel the slow. Takes me something like 15 seconds to get to 60mph so I’m thinking that gears will be my next upgrade. It’s definitely tolerable though, still accelerates ok in first gear and most off road stuff is at lower speeds so 4wd low works great.

I’ve seen a lot of debate between 4:56 and 4:88 for gear ratio for 35s. I figure 4:88 would be good if you had a bunch of armor and other weight you could be lugging around.

I believe the Tacoma beast guy did an interview with the owner of nitro gears and he said 5.26 or something around that is ideal for 35’s on the Tacoma. So there is a ton of bias. I’d talk to a gear shop and have them show you some rpm and speed figures rather than asking this forum that has 1 billion opinions.

OP, if you’re a manual, go with 4.56. If you’re an auto, go with 4.88.

The reason being manuals are overall geared a little lower than the autos.

    Don’t go 5.29s, that’s a third gen thing.

Why is it different for third gens? Is it the motor tranny combo that makes higher gearing better? Genuinely curious.

def regear. I regeared with 285's and it was great. but with 4.56 now on 315's its still not bad but im heavy AF and 4.56 I wish I had 4.88 but I do have an Auto. 4.3 or 4.56 for MT. My buddy has 4.3 and thinks its perfect for his LT Rig on 35's.

The transmission has a lot to do with it. I have seen 4.88 or 5.29 but with 35's def 5.29 gears.

Yes. I don’t know specifics, but I know plenty of second gens on here with both 35s and 37s. None are running 5.29.

Whereas I see what seems like every other third gen on 5.29s.

That makes sense. Regardless the answer is, yes, definitely regear lol

Agreed. I’m pulling my diffs now to send to ECGS to get a regear. Dammit I can’t wait.

Best part? I’m now waiting on some specialized sockets I didn’t have. Then have to mail the diffs in. Then wait for their return. Truck will be laid up for a couple weeks. Ugh.

You couldn't have made an appointment and driven down and had them do it in a day? It's only Raleigh not that far

What are those sockets for? I’ve done my fair share of wrenching but I can’t say I’ve used that.

@EatSleepTacos what's the rough cost for both diffs? I considered doing their program where I mail them in after performing the swap, but if they're in NC I might swing by there

It’s cheaper for me to ship them mine because then I don’t pay sales tax. Driving down was my original plan until chase at ECGS recommended against it.
They’re called inverted torx apparently. In this specific case they’re for separating the ADD tube from the diff.

    EB4DDDA0-D477-4B57-B5A4-05780467A7EF.jpg

Just a regear and no lockers is about $1500. I would mail them in because it’ll be about $110 in tax, or $60 in shipping. So this saves me money there, as well as my time and gas to drive there.

Edit: and that price includes the $90 I’m adding because I’m upgrading to solid spacers for less gear deflection.
