Are you stuck on a 15" wheel?

    Here's what 255/85/16s look like (33.5"x10x16)

a 10.50 will give you more traction in most terrain. extremely deep snow and mud a 12.50 would be better for floatation. I guess sand as well, I don't know anything about sand so I won't comment.

If you do a lot of wheeling or are at least somewhat serious about it you should evaluate what kind of terrain and conditions you do your wheeling in. If you are a mud bogger or go snow bashing all winter a 12.50 would be a good choice. However, if you like technical rocky terrain(that's what I enjoy) you would want 10.50 for a greater traction.

The 12.50 aired down may give you a larger contact patch but that is not good if you want maximum traction because your weight it dispersed more. So basically your lugs will slip over the terrain instead of bite into it or mold into the smaller cracks and crevices for maximum traction. the 10.50 gives you more pressure on your contact patch which means more grip.

Thanks for the knowledge. The most I've done so far is just going camping and hitting the trails to my buddies cabin and ect. Nothing to big yet. I believe 10.5" is my best choice for what I do.

A big advantage to the 10.50s too is that they are a good amount cheaper then a 12.50. Good luck with your choice

305/70s Worrk out great. Love mine, if you go for the thinner option, sand will suck.

In theory that is correct in a perfect world and maybe in MOAB where there is rock and rocks only. Throw in mud, wet tires and rocks that are not flat and surface area is far more helpful than the minimal theortical traction. Wheeling with a 12.50 on an 8inch wide rim is night and day compared to a 10.50 on a 7. Scince switching to a wider tire i have had less rim and sidewall damage. I have also been able to take harder lines with much more ease. Nothing sucks worse than trying to navigate some rocks and keep sliding off of a step because your tires are to skinny.

Very true, I have seen this proven by my friends with their 285/75's and also the opposite of my 10.50's having a little easier time getting through spots. I think it comes down to personal opinion really. I have only run skinny tires, while stock I had 235/75/15 and now 33X10.50X15. But by this time next year I should be able to give my own opinion on how well 35X12.50X15's do in comparison

    Not my theory.. http://www.expeditionswest.com/research/white_papers/tire_selection_rev1.html.

That is an interesting idea. it has been a few years since I have been in physics so I am unsure and really don't know what to say. Got me intrigued now :) That sort of friction for driving would involve wind friction (wider tire creating more). Then what I want to look into is surface friction...does the greater PSI downwards with a smaller contact patch equal out to the larger contact patch and lower downwards pressure?

I'm a fan of the 33x10.50s. Didn't think I would be before I bought them. On previous trucks I had had 33x12.50's, 35x12.50s, 315/75R16, and 37x12.50's so I had always had wider tires with good performance. I think tire choice should be different for every vehicle, and definitely for the type of terrain you are on most.

From my experience I have found that the 33x10.50 works at least as well (sometime better) than the wider tires in all terrain except sand and deep snow. I don't think they suck in sand and snow but I prefer better floatation from the wider tires in sand and snow.

I think for typical IFS Tacomas with ~2-3" of lift, the 33x10.50 is the ideal tire size. A 255/75R16 would be a close equivelant. They require less trimming, rub less than wider tires, are lighter weight so have less negative impact on performance and mpg, as well as braking. When aired down in the rocks the contact patch is slightly smaller so there is less scrubbing when turning and therefore less strain on steering components and bearings.

    Just my two cents
