    33's...Yes or no?

Saw a 4runner on 35's, guy said it takes too much work and isn't worth it. That 33's are easier.

Currently am on 31's, 265 70 17. I think Jeeps come with that and Ford Ranger uses that size if equipped with Ford Performance fox shocks as their recommended size.

Am thinking 33's MIGHT require crazy mods, like:
    -cab mount chop
    -trim plastic
-different wheels for offset that sticks farther out
    -more lift
    -gearing upgrade

really am not sure if stock gearing can handle it (6 lug TRD sport, might be 3.70)
    and how it'd affect MPG
or if mild lifts can even handle it. Like 1.5-2" rear AAL and front spring lift (2" OME 883X)

On one side, higher diameter would reduce RPM's in 6th cruising at highway speed. Which is usually better mpg.
But if the tire tread is now further out (33" diameter) especially if the tire weighs more, that might reduce MPG because it could be harder to accelerate it in city driving and have worse rolling resistance if it's wider.
Another option for 33 overall height is tall skinny tires like 250 (or 255?) / 80 / 17

5 lug 2.7L tacomas seem to have torquier gearing (3.9?), 3rd gen manual is 4.3, and old 4runners even came as 4.88...

Say you had mismatched tires wearing out. For next tire set, would you just keep doing 31's again? Or would you try 33's?
the few pics I've seen of tall skinnies have had 3" lift

I would go tall skinny. 255/80r17. You get the ground clearance, it looks good, and the tires weigh less and have less rolling resistance. They are also easier to fit without any cutting.

I'd just go for 33s. Sounds like you want them and will regret it if you buy the same size tires again.

Just get what you want in the first place.

If it’s your daily and you don’t leave the pavement often I wouldn’t go larger, but I do love the look of a bigger tire.

For me it wasn’t even a question to go bigger but I like to explore trails in the mountains so the added benefits of ground clearance and big tires to fill big dirt holes far exceeded any concerns I had for daily driving.

I liked the large tires so much I did it again and went even bigger!

bigger tires look so much better

plus with 31's if you air down to 20psi for grip on a trail, it just lowers the ride height a lot...
I don't know why but a 35" I saw aired down to 15psi didn't even look aired down at all

I have 315/75r16 (metric 35’s) now, E rated, and at 13 psi they barely bulge

Are you doing this for how it looks, or for off road? I have 255/85/16. I would never go with this size for commuting if That’s all I need it for. Reduced gas mileage, reduced power without gearing, etc.. but I am fortunate to have a Camry to drive to work. I wouldn’t go with a smaller tire for off road in my situation where I use my truck for hauling shit and off road only for the most part. Depends on what your needs are. If it’s just for looks I’m sure you can find a beefier looking tire that’ll look better but is not as large and heavy.

Yeah, I got 31.5” tires and honestly they are more than enough for most of my off off roading and camping adventures. And frankly, 33” is the highest you should go on a Tacoma that is a DD or is driven often/is not strictly for off road. Higher than 33 and you have to re gear and that’s a PITA. Plus, why? 33” have an amazing truck to tire ratio. To me, 35” tires look lame.

    32” inch also works well.

That’s a fair point about ride height. Although, I don’t sit down much on 31’s. 33 imo are a perfect tire size, but can be impractical. Depends on your driving amounts. Or a 32 Inch

How about 275/70/17s which comes out to 32.2" tires? These are K02s and I only get a very slight rub on the UCA at full lock and it only happens in reverse. No CMC necessary and pretty close to 33's. I'm still at stock height for now...

Don't be so fooled by everyone saying re-gearing is an absolute must for 33's. The truck will be fine without it, it'll just be a little slower. Im on 34's (305/70/17) with no re-gear and really couldn't care less. These trucks were never made to go fast and if you need your acceleration that badly, why drive a pickup? It is nice to re-gear and feels a lot better with big tires, but it is not a necessity.

I have 33 12.5 on a ‘14 with stock gears, perfectly fine. I had the same on a Jeep with stock gearing and couldn’t even put it in overdrive.

This is mine on 33's-255/85r16 to be exact. No rub out of the box with 2 1/2" lift. Rides the same as far as I can tell (came from 245/75r16's.) I have since cut the little tab thingy that hangs down in the front from the inner liner as at extension it was catching the lt side.

I am at 33x12.5 Ko2's. No regear and no CMC. Love the look and MPG impact was minimal switching from 285s. Slight rub in reverse and full turn.

I would make decision based on your lift size and what type of off-roading you do.
