I’m currently in the market for another vehicle and the Tacoma is one of the them on the list. I really like the look and purpose of 33 inch tires on them. So my question is the motor on the Tacoma strong enough to pull 33 inch tires for city/highway driving?

What about in terms of acceleration and MPG?

Acceleration is fine, put your foot into the pedal and it runs just fine.

Of course it's strong enough. I run 33's and get 19mpg and great acceleration and it runs just fine. It's not a V8 so don't complain when you don't get V8 performance from a V6, like so many thousands here do.

Yes it will do fine, but performance will vary dependent on more than just the tire diameter. The tire width, tread design, rubber compound, etc. will affect the rolling resistance and thus the performance of the truck.

I have 255/85r16 (33" tall skinnies) E-load mud-terrains and I notice a drop in 0-60, drop in fuel economy (15 vs 18), an increase in noise, and a more jarring ride quality on the road compared to the stock all-terrain tires. This was the cost to get noticeably improved off-road performance. Sometimes I wish I had lower 1st and reverse gears, but overall I am quite happy with my choice. I did also buy 5 more rims to mount the stock tires on for daily driving and road trips, but COVID has limited my road driving, so the mud terrains have remained on the truck. I take it off the road weekly.

I've read a lot about people regearing to 4.88 or 5.25 after switching to 33s and getting wonderful results. 5.25 seems to be the most common for the overlanding crowd.

Not a problem stock. If it bothers you there's always ovtune and/or gears.

4.88 for your average daily driver who hits a trail here and there.

I read somewhere that E rated tires are heavier than P rated tires is that right?

Yes, they have a lot more material on them to allow them to carry heavier loads.

I think a re-gear is a must on AT with 33s. My truck was a total dog with 33s on stock gearing. It hunted like crazy and had no power, driving it really sucked. I do have a Vagabond drifter camper shell, so my truck has some aerodynamic issues and extra weight. I re-geared to 5.29 and now it's just "ok." Don't expect much power IMO.

how would i know if my truck was regeared?

i’m on 33s with the AT and it ain’t underpowered.

i mean it’s not the 355 hp V8 i traded in for it, but it’s not weak

note: i have the 3.5l, not sure if that matters.

A re-gear is a pretty involved process and if your truck was purchased stock, you will have gears that are 3:90. Check out this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-5-29-mega-thread.557305/
