I had a 4runner with the 4.7L, while excellent it was not without flaws. Cracked exhaust manifold and secondary air injection system are the big ones from my recollection, both easily mitigated but still issues.

Atrocious MPG but totally worth it lol.

This is the way. Hard to beat a Toyota 4 banger.

Mods would need to GAF for that to happen. They'd rather get out the marshmellows.

That's how amazing the 4.0 is. I heard the initial design was taken from one of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
The bore and stroke dimensions were doodled in the margins on one of the commandment tablets.

Wish you could get the 4.7 in the Tacoma. That engine is probably the best Toyota has ever made. Not just my opinion either, several mechanics I have talked to said the same.

The 4.0 in my FJ has been flawless for 170K miles and I expect it will keep going for a good deal longer. My 3.5 has a long way to go but so far so good I guess! I will keep you posted and as always:

    Carry on!

As someone who has owned both, albeit one was in FJ flavor, I notice very little difference between the 2. 3.5 has more up top, but neither is what I would call strong. Not strong enough to brag about anyways.

The 6 liter in my Chevy was strong. That I miss.

My ex gf's son has his 6.0 here now. We pulled a plug and it was bent, shoved a borescope in that cylinder and the rings are on top of the piston.

I'm about to sell my 06 Tacoma with the 4.0 and buy my son's 2019 Tacoma 3.5ltr. (Same Model as my 06) Driving it this weekend to check it out. He claims the ride is rough....it will be interesting to compare the two. Shhh...he tells me there's a 3rd child on the way. I told him there is a minivan in his future!

Already had the motor, might as well buy the rest of the vehicle.

As for riding rough, is it a sport or Limited? The ride difference between models in a 3rd gen is drastic.

TRD Off Road with a 5' bed. My 06 has Bilsteins and the ride is just fine.

The Off Road should have Bilsteins too. It did originally anyways. No one who has ever driven or ridden in an OR on the stock suspension has ever described the ride as rough lol. Short of the tire PSI being sky high, it's quizzical.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Oooh burn from chatgpt. Other than it doesn’t understand numbers.

It depends on personal preference and specific needs.

The 3.5-liter V6 engine provides better fuel economy and offers a smooth, refined ride. It produces 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

The 4.0-liter V6 engine offers stronger towing and hauling capabilities, producing more horsepower and torque (236 hp and 266 lb-ft). It is also a more capable off-roader, but sacrifices some fuel efficiency.

Ultimately, both engines offer good performance and reliability, and the choice between them will depend on the individual's priorities, such as towing capacity, off-road capability, or fuel economy.
