I know the 3rd gens only for e brief time had a twin turbo kit through the OVtune website. But does anyone know, being the new Tundras are using a 3.5L engine thats turbo charged if anyone has been able to use those turbos on the tacoma 3.5L engine.
I would assume they are almost identical. Can it be done? Has anyone done it?

Don't assume anything, lol. Have you read about the problems they are having with turbos?

I have seen a few people having issues with them. Im sure eventually the quirks will be worked out. I was just curious to know if someone has tried or knows they can just be bolted on and minimal modification is needed and what difference it made.
Ive seen mixed reviews on supercharging our engines, some say its worth it, and others say its not as much of a difference as youd like for 7 grand.
Im interested to see more turbo set ups and how they compare regardless of turbo lag

@mZiggy can give you a full report since he's actually had the TT kit on a Tacoma. I can tell you based on what you've said so far this is not a project for you. Nothing will be straightforward or easy, especially compared to the supercharger.

Im not concerned with difficulty. Im a master mechanic and used to build performance BMW's and Audis, I was just curious if anyone has had any experience with it yet. I figured the answers would be slim to none being that the new tundra engine has hardly been out.
But like they say, if you never ask the answer is always no! lol

maybe go to the vftuner forum and see what you can find from those who have it. That would be the best source. GL.

I did it. It was a PITA. Hardware wasn't that bad but the software/tuning will be the achilles heel.

Tundra has completly different engine. Its still GR based, but everything inside the block is different.

Exhaust manifolds probably bolt up, but the odds of the same turbo positioning not having major clearance issues in the Tacoma is slim.

I'd move the battery to the back seat, mount a single smallish (K04?) turbo in that area. But unless you are going for a crazy build to run huge boost, the supercharger kit seams a lot easier to bolt on and run 8-10lbs. I like the procharger kit over the magnuson because it allows you to run a front mount intercooler, much easier to upgrade vs the magnuson air to water setup.

-Also have a turbo VW/Audi background.

I bought in at the preproduction price and sold at the new standard pricing and super happy I did. The guy I sold to I still don’t think has it figured out and last time I looked at the vftuner forum someone was stating his truck just sits in his yard, however this has probably been a year ago now. So I gave up hope and moved on. That turbo kit money did get used though for two weeks in Hawaii.

Is it from the same family? The 3.4L is V35A-FTS.

It doesn't matter how mechanically skilled you are to turbo the 2GR-FKS.. you'll need to be an embedded computer programmer guru and have some electrical engineering skills to get fueling to a point where it won't grenade.

how well does the Turbo work with the Atkinson timing or the engine switching between Atkinson and Otto . I got to imagine that is a bit of a bitch to get everything working correctly and lots of Gremlins to iron out. Maybe I'm wrong and its no big deal but just thinking the way the Valve timing with Atkinson works and the Increased air flow and intake pressures from the turbo.

Would think a strait engine swap would be easier, probably cheaper to if you can get a junk yard one.

I don't think there is a twin turbo kit available for the 2GR-FKS any longer. I believe there were a dozen or so released but you don't hear much about them and the rest of the orders were refunded afaik. If you want forced induction on the 3rd gen Taco it seems that superchargers are the only commercially available solution.

Perhaps the refined VF tuner software *might* support a home grown turbo kit without being an ECU developer <shrug>.
