Need some help, supercharger belt is rubbing the outer/front ear of the NEW dynamic tensioner pulley. As soon I start the engine the belt walks to the outside.

Details: my belt started rubbing the oil dipstick handle, and ended up tearing a large section off. I ended up changing my urd 2.1” pulley to the 2.2” pulley and replacing the SC belt. I followed URD instructions, besides their directions for belt misalignment which states to loosen the SC mounting bolts and sliding the unit to fix the belt misalignment. I did not follow it because if anything the SC pulley is further back than the idler.
I had an acquaintance at his shop take a quick look at it and he thought the tensioner was weak and the bearing of the idler was bad so I bought a new TRD tensioner and 1320 idler. (Would have gone with urd but they are out of stock).

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

CAUTION!! Video is loud squeaking noise!

I spelled tensioner wrong in the title. Seems fitting for anything with my truck. :crapstorm:

Something is still not lined up or poor machining on your new tensioner

Even the best vendors miss mistakes

Kinda hard without being up close and in person.

    Good luck.

Thanks, it was rubbing with the old tensioner and idler pulley also. The only things I've removed in this process are the PS belt, AC belt, dynamic tensioner, and bracket. I've read through the SC instructions and I don't see that I forgot anything. The only other thing I was thinking was maybe PS belt is too tight and pulling the water pump pulley (long shot, the belt can still twist to 90 degrees.) The PS adjuster is a PITA to reach but I have loosened it a little bit as is anyways.

I am just stumped. maybe time to go to a shop in the morning.

By chance has the Crank Bolt worked loose allowing the crank pulley to move

It does not take much with the Super Charger being more critical then the other belts

I think it might have something to do with the alignment of the fan pulley being to far out.
You have an electric fan, is there a chance that pulley is not bolted in far enough?
    Was this a JDM motor?

It's like you have a JDM fan bracket that's 1/4" or so longer than a stock usa fan bracket

Crank pulley looks different. Here’s mine for reference.

Yours looks to be pushed out closer to the fan.
As @1997tacomav6 said most likely jdm

*edit: never mind I’m an idiot don’t listen to me lol. You not having a fan threw me off.

I'll give it a check in the morning. I am thinking it is possibly the fan bracket bearing though I have noticed a slight wobble and also @1997tacomav6, @Bivouac, and another guy in the 3.4 supercharger FB group have mentioned it.

thank you for your response though, I appreciate it.

Not a JDM engine, possibly the previous owner went with a JDM bracket, but I have not. I think the bearing might be going bad, I do notice a bit of a wobble on it. I'll start pulling the belts off tonight and get a look at it. I think that fan bracket is the issue.

Thanks for your response and knowledge! I appreciate it.

I have the URD crank pulley. I changed the timing belt and water pump, etc. ~6 years ago and this is a fairly new symptom.
Now with the slight wobble I have seen with the fan pulleys and the opinion of a few others I think it is the fan bracket bearing or those pulleys are not tightened or something in that area. I will update tomorrow.

thanks for the picture and your response!

Is that supercharger belt 6 years old then?
It looks stressed. Gates is what you want FYI

haha. Nah, the one that broke last year was 5 years old. that is a new Gates belt, replaced it a couple of months ago. I did notice those marks on the smooth side. the outer edge wear from the rubbing has me more concerned but I bought another Gates I will install and keep this one as a backup once it is all aligned smoothly.

Little update, pulled the pulleys off the fan bracket and they were tight and centered. Ran the truck with both 2.1 and 2.2 pulleys withOUT the PS belt and there was no rubbing. Put the belt back on and rubbing and squeaking came back.

The fan bracket did not have any discernible play off axis but spun much more than the new Gates fan bracket. I also bought a Aisin fan bracket from rock auto for $10 less shipped, should be here tomorrow. I’ll install that bracket and reevaluate.

Alright, just finished putting the Aisin fan bracket on, and on the first engine start…. BELT IS TRACKING CORRECTLY AND NOT RUBBING!!

thank you, @1997tacomav6 for the fan support bracket idea. And everyone else for your opinions. All good stuff. Happy to not hear squeaking and rubbing on first engine start.

I measured half assedly. I used a micrometer and measured from the bracket face to the backside of the flange/hub and it was ~40mm. Same across the original, Gates and, Aisin.
