Hey guys. I’ve searched high and low on this and can’t find info I am looking for. Thought I’d reach out to the brain trust here. My timing belt snapped and while taking everything apart, I found the nub that protrudes from the face of the oil pump that the crankshaft sensor mounts to, snapped. I wrestled with thoughts of JB Welding it and actually did, but figured best to do the right thing and replace the pump. Truck is an ‘04 4x4. I see I need to drop the diff and pull the pan to replace the pump. I know there are internals at play here that will be accessed when pulling the pan. Is there something connected to the back of the pump face? Just kind of wondering, or wishing, that I could just unbolt the face and replace it that way. I’ve got the mechanical ability. Just been a good while since I’ve been this deep and want to make sure I am looking at every option. If anyone has fsm sheets I can download, that would be awesome. Thanks guys!

Do you have a picture of what broke just so my head can wrap around what's broken.

There should be a back plate on the oil pump that houses the pump gears…
Unbolt pickup tube, unbolt face, pull out….
line up & slide new one on

    no jiblets to worry about

No. Just remove the bolts in front.
It comes off as one unit. There are small bolt and a plate on the back holding it all together.

    Remove the crank pulley.
Then oil pan, then follow the guide below.

Here’s a shot of the broken mount. The crankshaft sensor, lower circle, fits into the larger hole, upper circle, from the side. Not the dark hole. You can make out a ring with the close to the camera side broken off. Guessing when the belt snapped, it slammed the sensor and broke the mount. The plastic lower timing cover bolts into this mount as well. I half think that JB Weld would hold it and the timing cover would keep in place if it vibrated loose. But, better not to cut corners.

Oh, and maybe I misspoke. Everything I was finding was calling it the oil pump, but the page TnShooter posted shows it is the oil pump body. Assuming there may be some interchange of names there in some circumstances. Just wanted to provide clarity. I was hoping to just replace that without dropping the diff and oil pan. But don’t think so.

There was approximately 110k miles on this belt. Previous owner changed it at like 83k miles. I can’t remember when they changed it though. Somewhere between 2012 and 2015. I have the receipt packed away. I got it in 2019 with 127k miles. I was hoping to get to 200k and change it. I have 191k now. Unsure the brand. No makers markings on it.

Were you able to replace the oil pump without dropping the oil pan? I'm about to replace the oil pump and I really dont want to deal with the oil pan job, it looks like its too much work.

I am thinking you might be able to cut the sealant on the oil pan to bottom of oil pump body and then reseal it during installation of the oil pump body.

Let me know what you figured out on this, I too scoured forums and couldn't find anything on this particular strategy. Thanks

@Josha71. I haven’t gotten around to it yet with travel tying me up a bit. The oil pan will have to be dropped. The oil pan pick up tube is bolted to the back of the pump. I had thought the same as you then found that. I’ve got my differential and pan all unbolted and will start working on it when I am back in town. Hoping the diff will have enough movement to where I can maneuver the pan out. I really don’t want to start taking the whole frontend apart like that. I’ll keep you posted but might be a couple weeks. Thanks and good luck with yours!!

Ok, yeah, I’m seeing that in the diagram posted above. Ok, I might try to get the oil pan off then. Truck has 200k Miles on it and I figured I’d better get a new oil pump on it. I’ll be working on it tomorrow, we’ll see how far I get it. Look forward to see how yours goes.
