I've been on Dirtopia and other sites that list the off-road trails with level of difficulty in San Diego and the surrounding areas. It has some great information, pictures, explanations of the trails which is really helpful, but; I don't know how their difficulty rating ranks up to my own. I guess the best way is to actually go and try the trails myself and find out. Nonetheless, instead of wasting gas to only find out I can't do some of those trails, I figure I can get input from my fellow San Diegans with first hand knowledge.

I would like some personal opinions/suggestions for off road trails that are 2wd friendly yet fun and challenging.
By fun and challenging I mean:
    • The trail CAN be traversed by a good driver, but could need help through some spots.
    • Not likely to incur body damage
    • Scenic views are a plus
*When making suggestions, keep in mind, 2WD lifted TRD Sport (LSD), aired down, all terrain tires, skinny pedal.

I've been out to Pine Valley and when it's dry, it's a piece of cake. So is Otay Mountain truck trail.

I read about Palomar Divide Road, Lusardi Truck trail, Santa Ysabel Creek Trail, Black mountain truck trail - which based on their descriptions all seem super easy. I read there is basically 1 trail in Corral Canyon that is capable of being done by a 2wd truck.

Long story short; what are some fun/challenging trails for a 2WD TRD Sport in the San Diego area?

Can a MOD please change this thread's title to "2WD friendly San Diego area trails"?
    Thank you

Black mountain isn't worth your time. It is blocked off after a few miles. Palomar divide is a really easy trail. You could literally off road your grandmother Camry on this trail. I didn't air down or anything. It feels like an unpaved road. It is a few hours to do that. The other 2 I've never been on.

Ocotillo wells is 2wd friendly over a large area if you have a whole day to kill.

I just did Mother Grundy trail this afternoon in my 2.7l 2wd. Really easy trail. Would like to try it with some mud. Also did proctor road which provided some fun sideways corners and found a small climb. I just picked up this truck and out looking for places as well. Going to try Otay truck trail next

    Some stuff here and there
All the trails you mentioned I've been and done, one trail you would like to challenge you is off the 8 east, lookup Fred canyon road, really fun fast and slow crawling for a 2wd just hit it on the 4th last week.

I'm trying to put together a run for August 11th or 18th for Pine Valley or another easy trail since there will be a mix of Taco, non-Taco, 2WD and 4WD joining us from my work. We'll be looking for someone to lead since we're all relatively novice or new to the area. If anyone here wants to join in, the more the merrier. Like I said though, we're looking for a lead until we can gain some experience.

Black Mt. north of Ramona? I highly recommend this trail. It’s not too hard but would be a challenge in 2wd open. I have never seen the gate closed but they may do it at different times of year.

I like doing Santa Ysabel truck trail and then heading up Black Mt. View is great at the top.

I know this post is old but whatever.

Pine/bear valley is a classic. It can be fun in 2wd open. Very easy if you’re locked.
