I had a Leer cap off a 2012 Tacoma 6 ft bed. Purchased a 2023 Tacoma off road 6 ft bed. I kept the Leer cap off the 2012. Called Leer dealer and he said the 2012 cap did not fit but he would sell me a new cap for between 3500 and 4000 dollars depending on extras and it would take 6 to 9 weeks to delivery. My neighbor came over and we set the 2012 cap on the 2023 bed. We found a very good fit if the cap was raised about 1 and 1/2 inches above the rails. We ripped and fit a wide board to fit. Here is what we found. The cap sets maybe a bit over a inch above the cab. Not a problem my opinion. The sides of the cap are maybe a inch wider than the sides of the bed rails. Again not a problem my opinion. The 2012 cap rear door is straight across while the 2023 tailgate has a curve. However the door closed perfectly and the rubber flap on the door made great contact with the door rail. I doubt if much if any seepage will happen. The only thing we missed was we measured the ripped boards to the length of the bed not the ends of the rail. I could have taken the cap off and ripped new longer board but over 100 degrees actual yesterday, maybe later but too hot outside now. I will just cut a foam block and glue it in. The factory cap to Tacoma bar clamps fit perfectly just got longer bolts. I looked at Amazon and found a set of add on C clamps and ordered them. This will give me 4 camps per side. I am very happy with the setup. I could drill down thru the cap, board, plastic trim and screw to the entire setup to the metal bed - I do not think that is necessary with 8 clamps. Things I wished we had done is measure a bit longer boards and painted them. Like I said it was hot and we were experimenting. Maybe I will redo the setup this fall. The cap cut out was done by the dealer who installed the 2012 cap. I think it may well be possible to set the cap direct on the bed rails if a person wanted to cut the cap. I did not want to do that. So my cap is untouched. If I decide to sell it, Later I can.

 

I bought a used high rise aluminum cap from a guy the did the same thing you did. Best $200 I ever spent
