So i have an 07 access cab v6 4.0 Taco which i use to pull trailers quite often. Now i have considered going to a full size truck but i just love my Taco too much to part with. So i have been toying with the idea of doing the 2jz swap then upgrading the rear leaf springs and mounting up airbags to beef up the suspension. Problem is I havent seen any 2jz swaps into a 2nd gen Tacoma and i was wondering if it will fit assuming i have motor mounts built and get the appopriate bell housing to keep the stock 5 speed auto tranny.
So here are a few questions to start with.
1- Will I be able to beat the firewall back in order to fit the twin turbo 2jz in the same way that it is done on 1st gen Taco's?
2- Which bellhousing would i need to mount the 2jz up to my stock 5 speed auto tranny?
3- Will my stock 5 speed tranny be able to handle the power of the twin turbo 2jz gte vvti while pulling a trailer?

I appologize if there is already a thread on this build but I looked and wasnt able to find one. Plz help :)

Considered just getting the TRD supercharger? The 2jz seems like a little overkill just to gain some power for towing.

How big/heavy of a trailer are we speaking here?

Welcome, my .02 would be to supercharge, as I would think you would be double if not triple the price to get a 2jz into ur taco.

Thank you for the welcome's and btw HI!! Anyways...

Yes, I do beleive overkill would describe it pretty well. But the trailers I tow are around 1,800 lbs plus a load of up too 2,000 lbs of sheetrock. A total of 3,500-4,000 lbs. Also I have 150k miles on my taco and i worry what putting boost to that will do at this point. Any input on the milage factor?

It seems like the superchargers go for around 3,500-4,000. I have found this engine http://www.ebay.com/itm/97-01-TOYOT...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ccb87904d&vxp=mtr, which will run around 2,000 after shipping. Then with a new bellhousing, motor mounts built, wiring harness built, and other odds and ends I feel like it could be done with a grand total of around 4,000-4,500$. It just seems to be a far greater payoff for the money, however, much more of a headache to do.

So that being said, I am open to the idea of the TRD supercharger if the price is right. Anyone know a place to get a good deal on one of these superchargers? And is the TRD the way to go if I decide to supercharge it?

This is grossly underestimated, a wiring harness alone will be over $1000.

Go to your dealership, you can get a trd supercharger installed, have a warranty and not have to go through the pain in the ass of having a motor that just wasn't designed for your vehicle.

FWIW in stock form the 2jz gte makes less horsepower and the same torque as you would with a 4.0 with the supercharger. Haven't seen an actual dyno for the TRD super charged engine but I would imagine the torque comes at a lower rpm and you don't need to wait for turbos to spool up. Obviously twin turbo engines can be made for turbo applications as seen with the Eco boost F150 but in the case of the 2jz the supercharger fits your needs better. If you were building something for performance and wanted to make 1000hp it would be a different. But for towing I don't see it as the greatest of options.

As far as adding boost, I wouldn't be toooooo concerned there are people here with over 300k miles at 150k you're just getting broken in haha.

Haha yes, i should say 150k and going strong!!

There is a guy on supratrucks that does these harnesse's for under 400 if you have both the 2jz harness and the stock taco harness, which i will have if I purchase this engine. I have done research on this, just not quite enough, hence the spot in the new members forum.

But i see your guys's points and im starting to lean towards the ease of strapping the TRD SC on my current 1GR-FE.
Can i buy the TRD SC online and have a dealer install it under warranty still? Or will i have to purchase it through the dealer themselves for the warranty to be in effect.
And I already had a remote mount STS turbo on this truck in the past, however due to a fatal screw entering the impeller fan I was forced to take it back to natural aspiration. That being said, will they STILL warranty the supercharger AND my engine?

Thanks for all the help guys. I appereciate your input on this :)

Needs to all be purchased through the dealer, they will not warrant your motor if it is out of warranty, but the SC should have whatever their standard warranty is.

Like everyone said. Way more parts and custom work involved.

    ECM/Wiring/Programming
    Radiator
    Intercooler/Piping
    A/C, Power Steering
    Exhaust
    Some stock Supra electronics
Aftermarket electronics (Boost controller, Wideband AFR meter etc..)

I know a 4th gen 4runner V8 can tow 7000lbs stock. I test drove a few, they are quite a bit nicer than a 2nd gen Tacoma. The newer 1st gen Tundra's are also really nice (04-06).

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
The stuff you are currently towing is within the tow ratings. The supercharger boosts the 4.0 to around the 400hp mark I believe, that would be plenty of power I would think.

Why on earth would you keep an auto transmission on that engine. I know you are towing but with a manual you get a lot more control especially in your situation.

Well I will go to a dealer tomorrow and see what they are asking, if its too outrageous then I will be buying and installing the SC myself because unfortunately i'm not made of money :)

Yes within tow ratings, however not the way i want it to tow. With that 5 speed automatic I find myself reving fairly high in 3rd in order to breach the top of some hills and not getting passed by my grandpa. I have pretty much decided to go with the TRD SC because I think your right. It should give me the extra power needed to climb hills in 4th gear.

I would LOVE a six speed standard tranny, you got one I can have? I'll even come pick it up man lol. All kidding aside, if you know where to pick up a used one of these at a good price, please let me know.

So speaking of that POS 5 speed auto, the thing just blew up while towing a trailer today. I have yet to see inside but I had some horrible popping and pinging coming from the transmission. I should know more by the end of today so i'll be back to update but my need for a 6 speed manual just became top priority.

Looks like the TRD SC is gonna have to wait :(

IMHO the A750E/F is pretty strong.Basically the same trans as the older V8 Tundras.
I tow my race trailer with the 4l trd charger(and a bit more boost, thanksURD) and a shift kit'd auto with no prob's.Knock on wood.
