Since I'm new to the Toyota scene I've never really paid attention, until now.

The second gen Tacoma's look almost the same size as the first gen Tundra's.

    True?

Did I even get the "generations" thing correct?

the tundra has a slightly larger body and wheelbase but yeah they're almost the same dimensions. there's a pic somewhere of a side by side if I can find it here in a sec I'll post it

Tundra is bigger. Especially when comparing DC to DC because the DC Tundra has a deeper bed than the AC and its still 6 1/2 feet.

Well.....I guess seeing an older Tundra and a newer Tacoma on the road they just "looked" to be a similar size to me.

For sure though, both models have grown significantly over the years.

    I think that's a good thing.

I had a 1st gen Tundra before my Tacoma (both access cabs) and they are very similar.

The 2nd gen Tacoma really isn't much bigger then the 1st gen Tacoma. I think people get a little carried away about it. I think it's only like 4 inches longer or wider (can't remember). I compared the demensions and weights between the two from Wikipedia onetime and was quite surprised about all the fuss was about compared to what I was seeing. As for as it being as large as a 1st gen Tundra I have no idea but I've parked next to a few and it doesn't really look all that close. Tundra was taller, seems wider, good bit heavier I would guess too. It's not like this gen Tacoma was a 110lb model and turned into a 200lb whale.lol

There are significant differences in all dimensions and cargo volume except for front legroom, and the lower front legroom is offset by the higher seating position, resulting in there being more apparent legroom.

This was discussed a couple of weeks ago and all of the measurements were posted.

1st Gen Tundra Doublecab was significantly taller than the RC/AC... it had an extra inch and a half added at the "belt-line". The original DC was more closely related to the Sequoia than the Access Cab... the electrical and front clip were interchangeable.

This post compares access-cab to access-cab

Keep in mind that "only a couple of inches" is a BIG difference.

    2000 Tundra - SR5 Access Cab 4WD
    Wheelbase (in.) 128.30
    Length (in.) 217.50
    Width (in.) 75.20
    Height (in.) 71.50
    Track Front (in.) 65.90
    Track Rear (in.) 64.90
    Ground Clearance (in.) 11.40

    Cargo Bed Dimensions
    Length (in.) 76.50
    Width at Wheelwell (in.) 49.30
    Width at Wall (in.) 61.20
    Depth (in.) 16.70
    Turning Diameter (ft.) 44.30

    2011 Tacoma - Access Cab V6 4X4
    Wheelbase (in.) 127.40
    Length (in.) 208.10
    Width (in.) 74.60
    Height (in.) 70.30
    Track Front (in.) 63.00
    Track Rear (in.) 63.40
    Ground Clearance (in.) 9.30

    Cargo Bed Dimensions
    Length (in.) 73.50
    Width at Wheelwell (in.) 41.50
    Width at Wall (in.) 56.70
    Depth (in.) 18.00
    Turning Diameter (ft.) 40.70

That's 32.5 sq/ft of bed area compared to 26.6 in the Tacoma.
Even with the bed sides being over an inch shorter, the Tundra's 45.2 cubic feet STILL beat the new Tacoma's 43.4 (not factoring in the wheelwells on either, Tacoma would lose more ground if I did but I don't have all 3 measurements for the wheel wells, but Tacoma wheel wells are just over 7" wide and Tundra was just under 6" wide).

    Interior?

    Tundra SR5 Access Cab 4WD
    Standard Seating 5
    Optional Seating 6
    Front Headroom (in.) 40.30
    Rear Headroom (in.) 37.00
    Front Legroom (in.) 41.50
    Rear Legroom (in.) 29.60
    Front Shoulder Room (in.) 62.40
    Rear Shoulder Room (in.) 63.20
    Front Hip Room (in.) 59.30
    Rear Hip Room (in.) 56.60

    Tacoma Access Cab V6 4X4
    Standard Seating 4
    Optional Seating N/A
    Front Headroom (in.) 40.00
    Rear Headroom (in.) 35.20
    Front Legroom (in.) 41.70
    Rear Legroom (in.) 28.20
    Front Shoulder Room (in.) 57.70
    Rear Shoulder Room (in.) 57.70
    Front Hip Room (in.) 53.60
    Rear Hip Room (in.) 53.60

5" wider inside, more rear seat leg room, more hip and shoulder room, 5-6 passenger compared to 4....

The Tundra was significantly bigger in ALL dimensions other than bed wall height and front leg room.
And the headroom/legroom numbers are deceiving. The Tundra had a higher seating position than the Tacoma. Your butt was a good 2" higher than in the Tacoma, so even though the headroom numbers are comparable at 40.3, the cab was actually taller and your legs were in a more natural "chair" position rather than the more stretched out passenger car position.

^ damn they seem neck and neck. I wonder what a test drive between the two, lifted on 33's would be like, especially with the power differences between the V8 and V6

    Totally different truck. I had a 2003.

The 1st Gen Tundra is larger in all dimensions (except for the DCLB Tacoma.) They are close in some dimensions, but they are not the same, and the frame is completely different.
The different wheelbase and nearly 10" difference in length tells you right there that they are not the same frame.

It's alive. Thread resurrection. I know this thread has been dead, but as a 2005 access cab tundra owner I think an important fact has been omitted.

Drum roll please........the tundra can fit a 4 x 8 sheet between the wheel wells with an inch to spare.

I will say the 4.7 liter is the smoothest I've ever owned. Don't know all the details, but bases on a lexus v8. Transmission makes for a smooth transition.

Back seat is not optimal for adults over 5ft
