Finally decided to invest in a head unit, read all this thread from 1->75 (very helpful!). I bought their "newest" 9'' (w/ Android 12) and my taco is a 2015 with the OEM reverse camera video on the head unit (option C on Joying options).

Installation is very easy (used YouTube video to understand how to remove the previous head unit without breaking anything).
With the Toyota harness provided it is very straight forward (I ended with 2 stand alone plugs not going anywhere).

    For the backup camera configuration
    1. connect simply the Toyota Joying harness with the revers camera pins => do not cut or do anything
    2. Configure the camera as @secondgear said on page 73:

    IMG_8400.jpg

    For the Steering Wheel Control
    1. Plug CAN-IN with CAN-out (mine by default was CAN-IN to KEY)
    IMG_8404.jpg
    2. Configure the CAN-BUS with the following options (hit save at the end) and reboot the head unit
    IMG_8403.jpg

    Factory settings code = 8888

I added their Front Camera as well:
    1. Plug the 2 camera's cables to the head unit
    2. Configure the AR camera as following
    IMG_8399.jpg

Joying is super responsive on the email for help and support.

    Additional updates:
    1. I ordered my unit directly on the Joying site: tax free and warranty (you can select shipping from US (2-3 days observed)

    2. if you want Toyota logo to appear when starting the unit:
Goes to Files folder in the App section. Open owner_apk file and select LogoSet.apk

Considering doing this for my 2014 as well. Love the OEM head unit but it is outdated and doesn't seem to be connecting well with my new iphone.

Does anyone know if there is an easy/at home update for a stock 2014 unit? or a way to upgrade software cheaply?

Dealership wants $200+ for a software update and at that price I would rather get a new shiny one.

LOL. No, there are no "updates" to bring the stock 2014 head unit current w/ modern CarPlay etc. etc.

I dumped my crap 2014 Entune head unit & put in a 9" Joying, very satisfied w/ the latter and it has been reliable since I put it in.

Obviously there isn't a magic update to turn my OEM unit into a brand new modern unit.

That's not what I am asking but thanks for the sarcastic response LOL.

Anyone have any info that's actually helpful? In case anyone else can't read...I just want it to work properly. If not I'll continue to try and figure it out myself.

Why are you asking about how to improve your stock headunit in a thread about a specific aftermarket unit lol

There isn't much to be done to improve the stock headunit. Pay the $200 to the dealer or replace the headunit. You didn't tell us what needs to be improved, nor was his answer sarcastic at all

To be fair, that really sounds like what you were asking.

It sounds like you’re asking about a custom ROM that can be flashed to stock hardware?
No, nothing like that has been developed/released that I know of.

For other vehicles, there are third party hardware solutions that plug in between the vehicle and stock head unit. The idea is to maintain the factory look (and often the A/C controls are part of the head unit) but gain CarPlay, etc.

For our Tacoma, you’re really better off just replacing the entire head unit.

https://www.toyota.com/firmware-updates/download is going to be your best bet. Essentially the same firmware update the dealer would provide. It won't add functionality, and you may already be on the latest, but that's it.

Not sure if this has already been addressed, but for those who do not like the black Dash Kit that comes with the Joying Head Unit and you have the gray interior, I found a paint color that matches the bezel almost perfectly. It is SEM 39283 Lite Titanium Bumper Coater Aerosol.

Thanks for the info. This would also help out with glare coming off the top that several have mentioned.

I'm looking to buy the joying 10 inch unit but I'm not sure which one to purchase. The previous owner replaced the stock unit so I'm not sure if it originally had big screen or small screen he also put an aftermarket amp and speakers so I'm not sure if i select jbl or not? How can I tell? Thank you

From what I understand, one way to tell is that the JBL amp and sub are behind the rear passenger side seat for the double cab trucks. I'm not sure, but I think the 2013 was the first year for the screen display radio.

Hopefully others will chime in on your question.

I read from pages 10-20 of this thread then searched but I have 3 questions:
    1) Is this unit Sirius/XM ready and if not how will I play my satellite radio? Not the app thru my phone as it relies on having cell/internet service.
    2) My primary use will be using Gaia which I use my iPad for currently. My iPad uses satellite for offline Gaia maps. Will this work similar or how will I use Gaia offline?
    3) My truck doesn't have steering wheel controls but I want the largest screen that doesn't have a volume knob, is there an aftermarket, at least for volume, knob I can buy to connect to the HU?
