    Hey guys,
UPDATE-- Thanks to spidy skills, awesome people and toyota part checking on toyota websites, I've typed out a fairly comprehensive listing for 2nd gen tacomas. Literally couldn't have done it without support and hope it helps someone. Please do your own due diligence and reference this as a guide, using your vin number and an official toyota rep to verify fitment before buying a replacement ECU.

hoping to update as folks provide input, let’s keep it simple

    Year (2nd gen only!!)
    Engine (2.7 vs 4.0 only!!)
    Transmission (MT or AT)
    Driveline (2wd or 4wd)
    Cab type (reg, access, double)
Bed type (shouldn’t matter but 4’ or 6’ bed)
    ECU part number

    I have:

    2008
    4.0
    MT
    ACCESS
    6’
    89661-04C90

From what I’ve learned, finding ECU’s for manual Tacoma’s is more difficult due to the sheer number of automatics manufactured vs manuals..

That being said @JustDSM can possibly provide a service to flash an auto ECU with a manual config if needed. The guy is awesome to work with!!

Cab and bed size don't matter, Toyota PCM's go by model, year, engine, transmission, 2wd or 4wd, and Federal or California emissions (although I believe all 2nd gens are 50 state (California) emissions).

    Mine is
    2014
    4.0L
    M/T
    4x4
    50 State Emissions

This is true, they are also double to triple the cost of an automatic PCM.
I found a spare one for mine for $200 but most manual PCM's are $250-400+ used.

Yeah, probably just a big company thing, too many people doing too many things, would cost them more money to make one ECU to cover everything so weirdness incurs.

Idk many other manufacturers use a single part number PCM that covers multiple models/engines/transmissions and do everything with programming.

Just manual tranny swapped my 2014 DCLB Tacoma. Thanks for posting this list! I see I need:

    2014 1GR/MT/4WD--

    (89661-04G80 Old/Replace)
    (89661-04G81 New/Replacement)

Does anyone know what makes the new/replacement ECM's different to the old/replacement ones and whether or not I shouldn't look for the ...80 part number over the ...81 part number? Also, I've removed the 4x4 ECM because I also VF2B manual transfer case swapped the truck (using a manual transfer case from a 4Runner) and no longer have/need a 4x4 ECU. Becasue of this, just wondering if I can broaden the search to X-Runners and PreRunners because there's slim pickings for MT ECM's!

The only thing I can think of is maybe it comes with the TSB updated programming for spark knock, maybe @Bishop84 can tell you more.

Would you be interested in selling the 4wd ECU and pigtails for it once you complete swap, I've been kinda keeping an eye out for one to experiment on for my 4wd thread.

I found a used one one Ebay for mine when I tuned it so I could keep the original one original, wasn't cheap though (~$400 I think?).

I ended up finding a used ECM this morning (ending in 80, not the updated one ending in 81) through car-part.com for $200 shipped. I'm still interested in the differences between the two part numbers, though.

As for the 4x4 ECM & connectors, I'd love to sell it and recoup some of the cost of the ECM I purchased this morning (which was a surprise cost). I still have the connectors in place on the factory wire harness, but they're heat shrunk, zip tied out of the way and not doing anything so certainly willing to remove fully if we can make a deal. Feel free to send me a PM.

Dang that's a good score for a M/T PCM, they are usually pretty expensive compared to the A/T ones.
Do note you will need to do the Immobilizer handshake and write the VIN to it (changing the VIN isn't necessary for it to run but it should be done), you will likely have to re-licence HP Tuners since I believe the licence is tied to the VIN and calibration numbers (M/T has a different calibration number than A/T).

    PM sent.

I figured I would need to re-license and re-up the credits but hoping I can use my most recent tune file from Justin after doing the handshake immobilizer and VIN write. I better read up on the HP Tuner thread to get reacquainted with the those steps.

Immobilizer reset is just 30 min with a jumper wire.

He would probably need to make you a different tune file since manual and auto calibrations are different but I'm sure he would work with you there.
