Has anyone put a catch can in there truck?

I have been reviewing them. I know it must be baffled, and have the brass filter.

What is a good or @ least a good depth/ml/oz to buy or have in the reservoir?

I also read it helps with performance and mpg?

Gen 2 Tacomas 4 liter engine is multiport injection so isn't it useless since the gas cleans the valves when it is on port injection at low rpm. The oil catch cans are mainly to solve an issue on the GDI engines due to carbon build up on the valves. Anyone know if the 4 cylinder engine is GDI or multiport? What about Gen 3?

4.0L and 2.7L are multiport injection only, the 3.5L in the 3rd gen trucks has direct & multiport injection.

Not much to be gained by adding a catch can to a non-boosted multiport injected engine, the intake manifold and throttle body may stay a little cleaner but as stated above on multiport engines fuel sprays on the back of the valves and keeps them relatively clean.
Keep up with oil changes and run quality fuel and there should be no issues.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't multiport injection mean that it is both direct injection and port injection?

Technically all modern engines use sequential fuel injection SFI (ie each injector is fired sequentially in the same firing order as the engine), older engines used what was called multiport fuel injection MPFI or MPI (ie multiple injectors were fired at once).

Direct injected engines are typically called GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection), some manufacturers like Toyota and Ford use both GDI and port fuel injection on some of their engines partially to keep the intake valves clean but also for performance and efficiency.

On a port injected engine like the 4.0 and 2.7 the injectors are typically mounted 1 in each of the intake ports of the intake manifold or cylinder head right above the intake valves.

On a direct injected engine the injectors are mounted in the cylinder head with the nozzle spraying high pressure fuel directly into each cylinder pretty much like a diesel, catch cans can help on a GDI engine to catch oil vapors from the crankcase and keep them from coking up on the intake valves since no fuel is spraying on them to keep them clean.

WOW! Lot of great information. I'm will ponder all this seriously. We need all the mpg's we can get these days. Anything to take out ANY amount of carbon IN MY BOOK, is a good thing....LOL! Thanks,

Catch cans do not immediately help with performance or MPG’s. They simply remove oil from the mixture returning to the engine via the PCV system. This reduces carbon buildup in the engine, long term. Another thing to consider - may not pass visual smog test. I have a Saikou Michi but my smog shop has thrice overlooked the catch can. If it fails, its just a matter of putting the oem stuff back in place.

Do not use the ones with the small bronze sintered filter, the filter will clog fairly quickly and your NCV will begin to perform the duties of PCV and that significantly compounds the original issue you're trying to avoid with a OCC.

My NCV filter (clear vial behind TB) as a visual indicator my OCC isn't clogged due to aforementioned previous experiences.

I live in IL, no smog test in this little town.
Thanks for telling me about the sintered brass filter, WAS SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT ONE WITH THE CAN!
I have learned to Seafoam through the little hose below the throttle body(tiny hose with a nozzle). I just pull that off and put the Seafoam straw in there and empty the can.........O BOY, THE SMOKE..........YEEEE HAAAA!!! I really can tell the difference. I do it every six months. So I might not do the can. Just thinking though and thanks for the reply's .

Are those metal tubes or rubber? they look like metal?

If so how did you do that with metal?

I prob wouldn't bother unless you had a boosted application. Plenty of old running Tacomas withoutthem. I have one I may or may not install but have a S/C. Only reason I picked it up.

how much did you pay for it?

If I do it, what size hose would I need......10AN or bigger? What does that even mean?

Catch can was around $180 + tax. I got a baffled Mishimoto one but it was 40% off on Black Friday.

They're polyurethane based pneumatic tubes and push bite connectors.

Is a Catch can usefull when you do steep climbing ? I don't remember if it's someone here who broke is engine (hydro locked), the oil started pouring in the intake by the pcv valve because of the steep climbing and flooded one of the piston (the cylinder #5 if i remember right). Last news was he wasn't able to turn the crankshaft with a breaker bar, thinking bend rod maybe.
