 I make that mistake all the time. Toyota engine designations hurt my brain.

By my calculations there are enough failures that I'll never buy a 3.5L Tacoma again. I'll never understand why some get so bent over an engine. A pretty lame engine that won't be revered 10-20 years from now.

I own my truck and drive it, that’s about it. This is by far the most underwhelming engine I have ever driven. It “works” but I can not figure out why so many feel the need to stand up for it every chance they get. It is extraordinarily lame and really not special at all. The fact that it has about 4 different problems that can occur (statistically low, but still there and recurrent) really makes it not that exciting to own. I’m looking to swap to the next gen depending on cost.

Statistically, I am satisfied with my 2GR-FKS engine until it fails. And then I won't be.

I just changed the spark plugs @ 95,000kms. They look perfect. I have zero leaks. I removed the upper surge tank to do the plugs. The intake runners are clean. So far so good.

Here are some calculations. These engines below far surpass the 3.5 Tacoma engine in the reliability and being awesome categories, statistically:

    5VZ-FE
    2UZ-FE (all 3 UZ engines)
    2TR-FE
    1GR-FE
    22RE
Just about any other Toyota engine sans a few bad apples.

You’re talking about how wonderful the 3.5L is and how nobody understands statistics, how about you share some statistics?

Good thing I'm not being too serious, just having fun. If you ventured out of the 3rd gen section of TW, and if you knew anything about the engines listed, you would have to agree by default.

There’s more than one definition of a calculation and what @Superdave1.0 has done is absolutely a calculation.

I’m wondering why it’s just the Tacoma engine that seems to have all the issues…or does it. I just did a little meandering on the 2grfks online. Lexus doesn’t have the issues with it nor does the Camry, Highlander, or Sienna.

The Tacoma model is the only one I’ve found with the valve issues. Those codes literally only return TacomaWorld in a google search. Not sure about the timing cover, intake manifold flap, or coolant crossover.

Funny noticed the same thing. It’s the same engine. Wonder if it’s due to the drivetrain being rwd vs fwd. Different torque dynamics, loading and unloading forces, it is weird.

    Lol that dude.
It's not rocket science. And it's not hard to understand that a new Tacoma is built every two minutes in a 30 day month in a three shift day. Not hard at all.

I wonder if there are multiple places where all these engines are manufactured, could be small differences in qc.

Different tuning, possible different internal parts, some are/aren't Atkinson Cycle like the Tacoma, the weight of the vehicle is huge. I'd totally buy the 3.5L in a Lexus car, completely different animal with more horsepower and lugging a much lighter vehicle.

It's a truck. Gets me from A to B, and does what I ask it to do.

If I wanted a spectacular and memorable engine, I'd by a supercar.

I know Tacoma owners are passionate...but, sheesh. If it runs, who cares?
