Hi, I am currently having issues with my 1GR FE engine for a 2005 Tacoma. I had a damage conrod bearing and rod due to seemingly oil starvation. I machined the crankshaft and fitted 10 thou' bearings twice after noticing metal shavings from bearings in the engine oil. I suspect it may be a damaged oil pump that is causing and has caused the initial problems. My mechanics are very hard headed and will not carry out any research. With that said, I have started sourcing a replacement engine for my truck but is having problems finding a 1grfe. I came across a 2gr and was wondering if it could fit in a 2005 Tacoma.

It would physically fit, but it wouldn't be a plug and play swap. I'm surprised you're having issues finding a 1GR, there are tons of them out there, but I suppose it could depend on your region.

I had the same problem recently. There are some used engines, but high miles and 30-90 day warranty with no extension.

No, you'd need engine management and harness from a 2016+ tacoma, that would bankrupt a small nation.

Most 2nd gens get short blocks now from Toyota and do a headmill/refresh.

is it possible. Yes... just depends on how deep your wallet gets.

to do a 2gr Looks like you could get the computer from ebay for about $200 with a warranty, and the wiring harness off a few sites in google search from $300-600. I would say your biggest problem would be transmission mounting, motor mounts, rework of plumbing (AC,intake, radiator etc) Plus sourcing a motor. and im sure there is more that would need to be sourced or fab'd.

I also am surprised that you are having problems finding a 1GRFE. They are usually a dime a dozen with as many years and vehicles they came in.

Have you checked these? Not sure what your budget is, but

The 1GR-FE and 2GR-FKS (from a Tacoma) use the same engine mounting and transmission bolt patterns. A/C, intake, radiator could all be used from a 2016-2022 Tacoma without much modification. So yeah, you'd need to get the associated bits as required, but it wouldn't be much if any fabrication, just need to get the right stuff to do it.

Personally, I would say the electronics would be the most difficult to get fully sorted.

He will need the 3rd gen transmission. they may bolt up but the ecu will not control the A750" trans properly, if at all. I say if your chose to go the route of complete drivetrain swap then put a v8 setup in there. Even it is the 4.6 or 4.7 from the GX series. Now that I think of it, a lot of them are using the A750" trans.

That's true if it's an automatic, but if it was a manual, his original transmission and clutch would bolt up with a 2GR flywheel.

the 2GR-FKS in the 3rd gen has the same issues as the 2GR-FSE from the second gen, the two motors are very close castings with different heads to achieve a higher compression ratio and to accommodate the new VVTI Wide system in the 3rd gen.

Like the 2nd gens, some 3rd gen fks engines have an issue with oil starvation to cylinder #5 causing overheating of the cylinder and increased risk of a rod going bad and taking out cylinder #5 and #6, probably cracking heads in the process.

It seems to tend to happen more if there’s an issue with timing or improper service intervals leading to dirty oil. The service life for the top end on a 2GR fks is to 150,000 miles at which point it will need replacement/overhaul to avoid failure (which requires the removal of the engine from the truck).
