Went to start the truck yesterday and nothing. Looked at the gauge on the battery and you could barely see the green.

I put a charger on it for 3 hours and the engine tries to kick over but nothing. Got it boosted and took it for a spin the truck runs fine at driving speed bt at idle runs low at 400 rpm's and shakes the truck. I went for a 30 minute highway ride came back shut truck off and nothing.

So figure the battery is done. I have now gone to every place in town and have bought too many batteries and returned them. Whatever is a 27f size is too tall for the bracket. Looked at buying the universal bracket but the threads are too high for the wheel well side to work.

What battery can I get that will work or got any suggestions for brackets? I've looked on here and nothing gets brought up about the bracket. I went to Walmart and looked at optima but they don't make a 27f for the tacoma.

Dealer? I know it's Sunday...but if you can hold out until tomorrow, they'll have the one that fits. I know from exp. with my Harley, that the OEM batteries last longer.

27F is the OEM size if you have a tow package. If you don't then it's a 24F. They are both the same height. The dealership batteries aren't actually the exact same that came factory. They get them from a local distributor, probably interstate, and put their own sticker on there. Those are the same batteries as Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, Sears and many more.

If the 27F won't fit, then the battery tray probably came dislodged or something is out of place.

Source: I work at a tire/battery store and do this 40 hours a week.

The tray isn't dislodged. I even tried taking the tray out. The old battery you could add water but the new ones are all sealed. The new batteries are about 1/4" higher and that's what's screwing me over. Doesn't seem like much but enough to make this not work.

For the stores and Interstate that Jason mentioned, Johnson Controls is used to manufacturer most of their private labeled batteries. For more information on buying replacement batteries, please see Section 7 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQ on www.batteryfaq.org.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I have the exact same problem with my 2013, 27F battery is too tall for the bracket. Any alternative brackets out there?

Home Depot/Lowe's sell threaded rod that might work.

I'm not sure I understand something. Are you saying that you are replacing a 27F with a 27F and now it doesn't fit?

Had the same problem when replacing my battery in a 2012. The only aftermarket battery I could find that was the same height as OE was from Advanced Auto Parts. Hope this helps.

Yes, that's what we're saying. I had the same problem when I changed my battery a couple of years ago. I think I bent the bracket a little, pushed down on it and got the nut on, hoping it wasn't enough to crack the battery but it's been fine.

I had the opposite problem replacing OEM with an Optima Yellowtop. It's actually shorter by about 2 inches, and I had to use a wood block to secure it with the bracket. It looks ghetto, but it works. It's a D34/78 btw. Here's a pic: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/big-3-and-dual-post-optima-battery.515012/

Another thing, the Optima comes with a plastic tray to adjust for height. I found that out after I threw it away!

The original factory 27F(Johnson Controls) battery in my 2015 PreRunner is just over 3 yrs. old. Who knows how long it will last. Have seen a lot of comments about the stock 2nd Gen battery hold-downs being too short, so I measured the height of my battery - 7 7/8".

Online search shows a couple of after-market(Napa/Deka) to be 9" high, so new hold-downs would likely be required. Auto-Zone is out of the question for me as the one local AZ goes out of their way to be jerks about returning faulty batteries. Dealer TruStarts are also off the table. Have had trouble with everyone I've ever bought.

I pulled the battery hold-down setup on mine. The rear rod is affixed to the top of the bracket that runs across the top of the battery. It can likely be removed by turning the hooked portion on the bottom of the rod. The rear rod is 6" long; would likely need at least a 7" replacement. The longer front rod(9") would need at least a 10" replacement to work with replacement batteries that are 9" high.

I have a comment just above this one, but felt like throwing this in - have done some more investigating :

I see a few posts here indicating people replaced their OE battery with something else to find out the hold down rods were too short. The new battery was taller than the previous.
As I mentioned above, my stock OE battery is right at 8" tall. Going out on the web I see all of the lead-acid replacements are 8 7/8" or 9" tall.
I mentioned this to a parts counter man at a near-by NAPA. He said " did you also measure the post"?

    Duh...

So I measured one of his 27Fs the way I had been measuring - from the bottom of the battery to just the top of the battery. Did the same with an Auto Zone Duralast Gold.
Lo and behold - both were 8" high - same as the Johnson Controls OE in my 2015 4.0L PreRunner.

I have yet to measure an Advanced Auto Part/Interstate/Deka. I suspect they are all 8". I won't have an issue replacing mine when the time comes.

Interstate also has their name on the Costco line which is the worst I've ever used. The dealer TruStart's are the 2nd worst in my experience.

If you google "who makes interstate batteries" - you will receive:

Interstate Battery System of America, Inc., a.k.a. Interstate Batteries, is a privately owned company that markets automotive batteries manufactured by Exide Technologies, Johnson Controls and others through independent distributors.

They make nothing - they simply rebrand other batteries. Last time I looked Exide, Johnson Controls; East Penn were about the only battery mfgs. left in the U. S. - I think I left one out, but can't remember the name.

You are probably thinking of Douglas, which was acquired by East Penn in 2005. Checking the battery's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) sometimes can provide more information on who the manufacturer of the car battery is.

Anyone considered drilling a new hole in the fender to anchor it a little higher up?

I just went through this same process... replacing 27F battery for a 2015 TRD Off Road. The battery I bought from O Reilly didn't fit (1/8" or so too tall) but the one I got from CARQUEST/AdvanceAutoParts fit perfectly. It was a bit of a hassle returning the battery to O reilly - they said they couldn't take back "electronics" items that had been "installed". I explained the situation and said the only installing was trying to fit in into the battery tray. Eventually they refunded me, but I had to wait while they measured every battery there to see if it was the right height, and several times they tried to talk me into a smaller group 24 battery that the computer said was an indirect fit (direct fit for the 4 cylinder truck). The 27f battery from AdvanceAuto was manufactured by JohnsonControls so probably the same unit as the factory. I didn't really want to modify or cobble anything up in my truck to make a battery fit, I figured I should be able to get an exact replacement. Hopefully this helps someone in the same situation.

Please help! I am in the military, stationed in Germany. I've tried two different 27F equivalent batteries (one from the US AAFES Car Care Center (Interstate green top-$128) and one from the local German economy (Bosch-$178)). Both have been too tall for the battery bracket to fit over on my 2015 Tacoma PreRunner. Where can I order a battery that will ship to Germany and what battery can I order to ensure it fits (not too tall) so that I don't have to hassle with mailing it back?
