Hey guys! I've been on TW for a while but just decided to make an account as I couldn't find the exact information I was looking for.

I bought a white 2016 SR5 double cab last summer because I always loved tacos and knew I'd need a reliable truck for my new job. I put a leer cap on it to store my tools and upgraded to the TRD pro grille (easy and cheap) I included a pic.

Its been working great so far and I knew I'd want a lift and new tires at some point and that some point is now. (Well soon, hoping to install by early spring) I dont want to do anything TOO crazy as I don't really do much offroading, but want to keep the option available for the future incase I want to take a few weeks off and do a road/camping trip with a bed tent.

So for the mods I'm pretty set on the 2" OME total lift kit. I would go 3" but Id like to keep stock UCAs. Again, i'm trying to keep it simple. Im considering the heavy duty version but would like a second opinion on whether or not to go heavy duty. I have about 400lbs of tools I keep in my bed at all times (I'm a contractor) and I'm going to get the Hiline series front bumper as well. I'm just wondering if this would justify the heavy duty.
I'm also wondering about the big tire question. I want to go as wide as possible with new tires without requiring CMC. Would I be able to get away with 275/70r17 on 8" wide rims with the right offset/backspace? Again I'm not doing heavy offroading, so even if 275s rub at like full lock and full compression I'm not too worried. Especially if it would just be mudflap cutting, I'd be fine with that.

Basically 275s fitting that maybe rub flaps at full lock/compress is ideal, cause I could do that cutting myself down the road when I find myself on more trails. Let me know what you guys think or if you have any suggestions!

If you are tied to having an 8” wide wheel, you may have to do some minor trimming if you are careful about offset. If you stick to the Toyota 4Runner Pro 17” wheels “SEMA rims”, they are only 7” wide and will not rub. They also have about 1” more “poke” than the stock taco wheels, so a little more stance. Prepare yourself for some loss of power.

    Lots of info here:

Interesting. Out of curiosity, how will the wider rims affect rub if the tires are the same width? This is assuming I can keep the same backspace on the rims, if not a little less. There seems to be so many different variables the more I look into it i might play it safe and go with 265s then, unless you're saying I could fit 275s on a 7inch rim. And yes I know everyone's truck is different. Seems like at some point you just have to pull the trigger on something and hope for the best lol

275 wide tires are within most tire manufacturers recommended fitment on a 7” rim, so it’s all safe and approved. Tires fit a range of rim widths. Many guys run 285 width tires on 7” Toyota rims, but technically a 7.5” rim is the narrowest for a 285 tire. 275/70/17 are approved on an 8” wide rim as well.

The 8” wide rims do a couple things that make the fit tighter. Mostly they increase the poke of the wheel (even at the same offset), which adds more possibility for interference. Also they do make the overall tire wider as they push out the sidewall which does make the edges of the tread slightly more likely to contact. 275/70/17 tires look much wider on an 8” wheel than a 7” wheel as you can maybe see in that thread I shared.

I did 275 on a 7" wheel for the exact reason you're worried about. It came out wonderfully. No trimming and a ~2" lift. Stock UCA's. 238816FE-B934-4CD9-B412-0C8CEF8D3E29.jpg

How much is the speedometer off with this size? What tire are you running and did it rub on the factory mud guards because I see you don't have them on? Nice looking ride! Looks just like my Son's truck.

Thanks! Two or three MPH but I normally run Waze and just use theirs. C rated Wildpeaks. Never had factory mud flaps.

I have 8.5" wheels with 275/70/17. I've been fussing with the rubbing and shaving off some plastic trim parts for a while now.
I rubbed a lot on the inner fender liner with sharp turns (backing into parking spots) and it was easily rectified with a heat gun and molding the plastic away.
At full lock I was hitting trim pieces. Those were the only places I shaved off with the dremel (which were maybe a cm or so if that on the fronts)
I only have rekgen mudflaps in the back. Don't think I'll be able to have them on the front.

Edit: mud flaps weren't yet on the truck when the picture was taken.

Nice that's just what I wanted to hear. What offset are those rims? Are the tires flush with the fenders or do they poke out a little? I'm trying to have a little poke for a nice stance if not flush.

Right that makes sense, thanks. What do you think about the lift? Do you think my circumstances would justify a heavy duty lift?

A little poke. Not enough to trash the paint daily. They're 0 4Runner pro wheels.

Alternatively what if I ran a 265 on 8" rims instead? Would I still be running into the same issue?

If you are going off road, don’t forget about rock rails.

The 265/70/17 don’t have as tall a sidewall as the 275/70/17. Lots of people seem to rub them on 8” wheels with no issue unless they have massive offset.

This doesn’t account for rim width or offset, but is a good resource for comparing different tire sizes. The actual size will differ slightly between manufacturers, so you need to look it up.

I do a mix of daily driving and off-road expedition travel and camping in my truck. I am happy with a Billstein 5100 lift on the front of my truck. I have a add-a-leaf in the back.

This might not be considered “heavy duty” like Kings etc, but is proven, lifetime warranty, maintenance free, and installed on literally tens of thousands of Tacomas with no complaints.

Hey do you have a front view of your setup viewing down the side? I want to see what the flushness is like.

I've decided I'm going to play it safe and go with a 265/70r17 to hopefully avoid rubbing, and the 275 doesn't come in c rated tire. And 275s are backordered in Canada for who knows how long. But I'm going to try out an 8" rim with a 5mm offset, I put the info into an offset calculator and it'll poke out 1.3" more than stock for the stance I'm going for. Hoping between the lift and smaller diameter of the 265s it'll clear. If anything I'm sure the rub would be minimal. I barely do anything off road right now and could do minor trimming and put aftermarket mudflaps on when I cross that bridge, or should I say trail

Just got er fresh out of the shop! Worked out perfectly. Went with the 265s on 8" replikas, got the perfect poke I was imagining, and zero rubbing. 10+ hours on here researching paid off 20210325_192425.jpg 20210325_192521.jpg 20210325_192601.jpg 20210325_192633.jpg 20210325_192343.jpg
