I am sorry if this has already been covered but I couldn't find my answer easily with search.

Has anyone run 255/80/17 size tire on a stock TRD Sport with stock wheels and suspension without any rubbing issues?

Thanks in advance for any input you can share!

I haven’t done 255/80. I couldn’t find hardly anyone with larger tires on sport wheels other than 265/70R17. I really doubt you’ll find a 255/80 on the stock wheels out there because very few people keep stock wheels. I took a chance on 255/75R17 and it worked out. No rubbing, ever. 255/80 MIGHT fit but it would be pretty tight.

When I look at my truck while turning the wheel, I notice less clearance between the back of the tire and fender on the right side. When I has the Sema wheels before the Sport wheels, I only rubbed on tight right turns with bumps.

I would personally suggest 255/75 unless you have a specific reason for trying to go 255/80.

    Here’s mine if it helps.

255/75r17 is a nice option because it’s usually 6 ply instead of 10. Way lighter because of that and it’s also a bit smaller

Yes 255/80/17 Nitto, have very minor rubbing on right side front fender flare/wheel well at half turn left or right. Mud flaps had to go, but some are able to keep them.

I’m saw your post where you were hitting UCA before getting the tire on with those stock wheels. What was your solution for that? Never a problem for me but curious what you did.

I was specifically looking to go 255/80/17 for the added height. I live in Canada and I do a lot of ice fishing with truck which means driving through a couple feet of snow sometimes on the lake. The extra height would be nice for ground clearance so less chance of get high centered. I don't have the budget for new wheels or lift so I am trying to figure out the best way to get a bit more height. I currently have a 265/70/17 so I think a 255/75/17 would almost be the same size and not give me that extra height I'm looking for.

You’ll be able to run them as said before, but you’ll probably have some issues on the right side. If you don’t have the mud flap then it may not rub at all. I do have flaps and I’m close on 255/75. Only close on right side though, not left.

Lol, damn that was a fun time, had me questioning all sorts of things about my 5100 install! Everything fit before I messed with it afterall. Actually bolted the wheel up, and once the truck was supporting itself I had just enough clearance, tire would still rub the UCA from time to time just forward of the ball joint if I really got into a weird spot but not anything to concern with causing damage. Since then I've switched to Dirt King uppers, and TRD wheels.

    Edit, typo

255/75R17 Duratracs run bigger than most (if not all) other brands of that size, as far as I’ve seen. I’ve parked next to people with 285s and compared them side by side and they weren’t much taller than mine (maybe 1/8-1/4”). They look like most 33s to me. Minimal rubbing on the mudflaps at full lock over bumps with SEMA wheels (would be a bit less rubbing with stock OR wheels).

Duratracs were like the smallest out there by spec when I was searching. Toyo and Continental were the largest I saw at 647-648 rev/mile. Not that it really matters though. Anything 255/75 is close enough to go off of.

Waiting for a few members to chime in who say they fit without issue, but I think it comes down to off set of their rims.

Possibly on paper, but not in person. The wheel width the manufacturer measures the tire on, how accurate their numbers really are (I’ve seen some strange claims of actual size by tire companies), air pressure, the weight of vehicle on a tire vs. no load, etc… are all variables. I’ve had 255/85R16s on 2 different trucks and the Duratracs on my Taco are almost the same height (and they shouldn’t be as far as “size and specs” go, but they are).

so keep the smaller tires and leave room for tire chains on all four corners.

Pretty much hooped for chains on the front of these trucks. I wouldn't risk it with how close it is to the uca regardless of which stock tire size.

For cruising the lakes I found trying to stay ontop of snow a far better approach than cut all the way down. I have 285's and run about 10psi and crawl around havnt gotten stuck on a lake yet with that set up

Skinny 255’s allow for chains. :D

edit: at least with a lift it did.

Yeah I still wouldn't risk it there is not much clearence to that uca/spindle pretty sure right in the manual it states not to mount chains up front but I would have to confirm that.

My brothers been running 255/80r17 on his stock sport for 3 years. His mudflaps were off before he put them on, thats the only place they will rub. You can fix that in 5 minutes with a heat gun. I run 255/85r16 on my pro with rokblokz flaps no rubbing.

Spend some time in the skinny tire threads, you'll find all your answers there
