Lots of size questions out there so I wanted to post about 32.0" tires on 3rd Gens for your information and consideration in your tire size decisions.

I have a 2020 TRD Sport, 4WD, Access Cab, Manual Transmission with 965 miles on it. My goal was to get tall skinny tires without a lift. Full 32.0” was the goal and what I thought would look best and be functional. I personally dig the “pizza cutter” look and appreciate the decreased rolling resistance and weight savings that it provides over wider tires since you can get SL and C load tires. Remember, the bigger and beefy tires often have load range E which = more weight. More weight equals loss of gas mileage via increased rolling resistance.

I went with Goodyear Duratracs 255-75-17 but could have done BFG ATs or Coopers.

Yes, I was hunting unicorns with the desired size, load rating, and tire weight, and realize that if I lived out west where volcanic rocks and popped beads are a reality this might not work, but I do not. Keep in mind your situation, goals and what you expect to encounter and the pros and cons of your tire decision. Could there be rubbing if I went deep off road? Maybe. But daily driving and light off road, I don’t think so.

I wanted to keep the stock 2020 Sport wheels, as they have grown on me. They are reported to weigh 28 – 30 lbs each and with a 43 lbs tire that is 71 – 73 LBS each tire which is only 5 lbs more each corner than stock with the stock 265-65-17s which is not bad.

All the online tire company research I did indicate these will not fit and give you grief when you are researching them. Clearly, the websites are set up for stock tire sizes and nothing else. I decided to go to the tire stores to ask in person to get a true answer. Discount Tire was very helpful in my search and it worked out in my case.

Now, every truck is different and I suggest you actually measure your specific truck to know what will or will not work. In my case, a 32” skinny tire worked without issue. I probably could go a little bit bigger, but am not worried about that right now.

My particular truck’s dimensions, fully stock, no additional lift, full tank of gas, are below. The truck came with the Toyo A30 P265-65-17 tires with the 16” spare. I have no armor, (unless you count the TRD aluminum Skid plate armor - which you should not), or heavy aftermarket bumpers, bed caps, overland braces or anything like that. I do have an across the bed storage container, aluminum Craftsman brand, with some tools and stuff in it, but nothing heavy. To be sure, measure your truck before making a conclusion….

2020 TRD Sport Truck Stock Suspension Measurements

Fender to Ground Center of Hub to Fender

    Left Front 34 ½” 20 ½”

    Right Front 35 1/8 ” 21.0”

    Left Rear 36.0” 22.0”

    Right Rear 36 ½” 22.0”

Clearly there is some “taco lean” from the gas tank of approx. 1/2” in effect… My truck looks like it sits higher than usual, I thought it was just the result of the stock 265-65-17 tires, but the guy at the tire store even commented it looked like it had a lift which it did not. It is just the stock blue shocks and springs as it was purchased. I do not know if I got lucky or what, but my truck did appear taller to me, and I have had a couple other Tacomas to compare with. My 2020 sat an inch or two higher than my stock 2009 which had 265-75-16s on it when I parked them next to each other, so take that into consideration.

I have done some serious research on “pizza cutters” and my goal tires are ranked below. I also included the standard size that is known to fit without lift in case my search was fruitless. I also included an in between 31.0” Toyo because I really liked the Toyo tires. I wish they made a lighter 255-75-17 Toyo tire because I would be on it, but they do not. Now, there are other 32” tires, like Michelin and others but I did not include them here because those are more street tires than off road tires, and frankly an off road tire is what I wanted.

    Taco Tires

Rank Size Inches Tire Make/Model Load range Weight

    2 265_70_17 31.70” Toyo AT3 #356260 Load Range SL 115T BSW 41 LBS

    4 265_70_17 31.65” Nitto Ridge Grappler #217940 SL 115T 44 LBS

    1 255_75_17 32.10” BFG AT KO 2 #11450 Load Range C 111/108S 46 LBS

    5 255_75_17 31.97” Cooper Disc AT34S Load Range SL 115T 39 LBS

    3 255_75_17 32.06” Wrangler Duratrac 150684601 SL 115S 43 LBS

    6 255-70-17 31.10” Toyo AT3 #356240 Load Range SL 112T 38 LBS

265_75_17 32.65” I think these would fit on my truck, maybe some rubbing at full stuff/lock…

255_80_17 33.06” I do not think these would fit without rubbing and trimming or a lift.

So, I went with the DuraTracs over the BFG ATs because I have had BFGs before and wanted to branch out. I really like the Toyos, but they do not make them in a 32”, they have a 31” which was a backup plan, but I wanted 32”s. I have read up on Duratracs and hear that as they wear they get louder, but they seem to have good wet traction and are not too loud when brand new so I went with it. With the RONA out and about, well I am not driving much for a bit so I figured why not.

Yes, 32.0”s fit, no problem on my stock 2020 TRD sport without issue. No rubbing at full lock either way and there appears to be room to spare. Now, would it rub if it was at full compression and full lock, I do not know. Maybe, but I am not doing that to a brand new 2020 with less than 1,000 miles so we will see later. I think that the BFG ATs would clearly fit no problem and maybe 255-80-17s, but I really think there would be rubbing at full lock and trimming needed with 255-80-17 so I did not go there.

Downside is the spare tire compatibility as it is a 16” tire. I lost that ability. I figure I have fix a flat and AAA so I will be ok until I figure out a long-term solution. Keep that in mind with changing tire size.

The purpose of my post is to provide information since there are so many threads about tire size and there is a lot of confusion and disagreement on this board. I just wanted to provide one perspective for those asking and trying to decide. This is just one data point for you to take into consideration when making a tire decision. Lets face it, we drive Tacomas and want bigger tires for multiple reasons.

Attached are some pictures for your decision process. I think this is a good mix of size for use and will update my findings in the future as I wear them.

There are some good skinny tire threads out there to reference. One I saw recently, (but of course I can’t find it right now), that does an in-depth discussion of the effects of tire and wheel weights on MPGs.

    Found it: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...eel-tire-combo-trd-rock-warriors-ko2s.381030/

Thank you to all those that posted the info before me to help in making my decision!

I have the same, and they rub a little on my 15 sport...
Oddly I run at3 4s for the summer on trd pro wheels, and they rub more than the duratracs... I dunno. Happy w both, esp the milage on the coopers

FLJB, thank you for taking the time and effort to put together this very helpful information to help out the community. As you mention it seems no 2 trucks sit exactly the same, but in your case it looks like you picked a very good tire for your needs.

All the measurements should be very helpful. Thank you for your business.

Yeah, I really think the wheel backspace affects the rub or not. This is a major factor in rubbing, the 3rd gen offroad wheels seem to have the best or most efficient backspace for tire fitment.

Toyo 255-80-17s will be awesome! I really like the toyos, but wasnt sure I could fit 33"s without a lift and they did not have one to roll out and check... Post some pics.

Yeah mine have just enough clearance full turn and I’ve got the 2.6” bilstein 5100 ome 888 lift in front and 2.1” in rear. And yes I effd the front underneath the headlight at work not paying attention texting and backing up. Clipped the end of a tank car. They’re LT Load range E and they feel perfect to me. Maybe slightly stiffer than my AT2s were but I like it

Good post, and good job paying attention to all the details. I also run 255/75R17 in KO2s (from the thread you linked). Mine mildly rub when turning and being compressed, but for most street driving it is a non-issue. Rubbing will depend on the wheel width and offset as well. Rubbing can be reduced by using SPC UCAs to adjust the wheel position forward. For your spare you could consider picking up a used matching Sport wheel and ditch the steelie spare. I swapped to a full size spare with a matching wheel, you just need to tap the sheet metal tire guides under the bed with a BFH to adjust it to fit.

Yes, your thread was very helpful and informative on weight impacts and a good read and an inspiration for my decision to go skinny. Thank you!

I probably will get a full size spare and the BFH mod as soon as I can find one for the right price.

Thanks for the pics, they look good and Toyos are great tires!

No way those would have fit on mine without a lift then...

Bummer about your fender. That is the problem with the newer autos, they are very safe but minor bumps cause more damage that is not easily repaired.

That is the clearance front(bottom two) and back(top picture)I have and it’s actually a little better than that full turn

Yeah, those SEMA wheels will look good, especially in graphite on an MGM and you should not have any rub worries from what I have read...

Post some pics when you get them!

Finally got around to mounting the tires and wheels. Not a great picture but it is what I have for now. I ended up doing a two inch spacer in the front and an AAL in back39186.jpg
