Leave the motor running too, as your winching.

I’ve ran an odyssey group 35 AGM for the last four or so years. Plenty of additional lighting, a fridge, USB charging, a winch, etc. has worked fine so far.

    Only weighs 50lbs, 765CCA, 117 reserve.

Helps, but doesn’t help much. Alternator output at idle is low, and even if you revved it while winching, it would still draw down the battery. Unless you just use it to drag the wife out of bed bath & beyond maybe

If you don't wheel hard and only occasionally winch, the X2 24F seems ideal. Far more power than stock, same size as stock and doesn't have the extra weight of the 27F. I run the 24F in my 1st Gen. The only reason to consider the 27F is if you have heavy extreme battery use, regular long winch pulls or using the battery to power overnight camp setups. Extra lights don't use the battery when the truck is running, those are supplied by your alternator. A better battery has no benefit there. Winching exceeds the power of your alternator, and draws from the alternator power plus the battery reserves to supply sufficient power to the winch. Stock, 24F AGM or 27F AGM will all do this, but better batteries can do it longer. And AGMs can be drawn down further without damaging the battery, unlike the stock lead acid unit.

I went through this same battery research debacle. You can spend $300 or more or do what I did.

I've got a 24F Everstart AGM from Walmart with an off grid engineering battery strap. It's 710CCA and plenty of juice for an aftermarket stereo system, lights, and other accessories. They're around $170 and that includes a 4 year free replacement warranty. I don't think you'll find another AGM with those features at that price point. Noco Genius 10 keeps it topped off about once a month.

I would go 27F as the middle.
stock - fine but then started running fridge and other stuff

Rest are AGM And I boosted my alt voltage to help run the AGM battery and also have solar that keeps it topped off with a DCDC charger
31M AGM - was fine but needed solar and boost the voltage (died due to dieing too many times). These also after a while will crack your battery tray area if you wheel alot.
35 AGM - part of a dual setup. Died on me after awhile too small for running my stuff
27F - warranty replacement but larger and better. Still had some trouble running my stuff in winter time.

I am now planning on moving my starter and such to the bed of my truck.

I like AGM for the main and such but you do need to ensure you have a way to boost the voltage or it will slowly kill the battery.

I swapped my org. 24F battery out for a Toyota True start 27F abd a 2nd gen battery tray dropped right in. Fits perfect, maybe it me but I swear the truck starts faster but maybe the battery was just gwtting old. It was the org. battery with 22k miles on it. Truestart is aka Interstate made by Johnson controls and offers a great warranty. All my Toyotas get a TrueStart.

I went with a 27F Northstar AGM based on the research done by @crashnburn80 . Even got the 2nd Gen's 27F battery tray.
It is pretty difficult to source this battery in my area, but decided it is wiser to go to the best battery (NorthStar) than for one on a budget.

I am also tuned for AGM batteries, so I do not have to worry about undercharging.

Nice all of my AGMs have been Northstar as well. I found easy way to get them is source them online.

    Cool stuff
Let me also mention that odyssey and NorthStar are from the same manufacturer now ….

Just replaced my 24f with interstate 27f and Toyota 27f tray after the OEM 24f failed.27F is a Lighter weight, larger battery with more reserve and more CCA. I refuse to install any battery that’s heavier than the stock one due to the cracking sheet metal heavy battery issue some Tacoma owners have suffered with.

Also, yes. AGM batteries are pretty much a useless upgrade for the 99.99% of Taco owners who don’t run “Tunes” or ECU adjustments. Or would never want to do such. They are a superior battery, though.

DC motors have a huge spike in their current draw when starting, or when stalled. Cranking amps will factor in for a winch exactly the same as for a starter; both are DC motors operating on the same mechanism, the only real differences are that winches will often be kept running for longer periods than starters and will be in use while the alternator is running.

With an up-sized alternator, the reserve on the battery can be kept out of play on long pulls since the winch motor will only draw about 10% of start/stall current once they're turning steadily.

Is that the factory tie down or did you have to swap it for a different size?

    Here's what I found:
    • Stock Toyota battery (group 24F): weight 41.6 lbs, CCA 582, RC 125
    • Costco Interstate (group 24F): weight 42.8 lbs, CCA 700, RC 130
    • Costco Interstate (group 27F): weight 49.4 lbs, CCA 710, RC 165
Given that the group 27F weight is only marginally (~19%) greater than stock, but has substantially more RC than the group 24F, I went with the group 27F. I see no clearance issues from the oil filler neck, when using the 2nd-gen OEM battery tray.

Also replaced the tie down kit with a stainless steel / powercoated one from the usual tropical store.
