I have a '21 SR5 with 245/75/16 on it now. When the time comes for new tires, I thought about putting 265/70/16 on there. I know there wont be much difference except for a little wider look, but is it worth it? Pros / cons? I have the later size on my '04 TRD. Thank you.

I just did the move from 245 to 265/70/16 and I noticed more of the quality of the tire upgrade than the size difference. (went from no name brand tires to General tires), but here is what I noticed:

Better traction (dry street) and better looks! Very slight difference in steering effort.

Unless you're really OCD about wanting wider tire for "look" reasons, the reality is that for the same tire model, the cheapest between 245/75 and 265/70 is the smartest choice.

235/85r16 a real pizza cutter, tall and skinny, looks good and low rolling resistance

I finally had a chance to try hypermiling on the new tires mentioned in my previous post. This info is most likely uninteresting to most people because it requires driving like a granny 58- 60 mph and accelerating like a slug. I was able to eek out ~25.8 mpg on a 100 mile stretch of I81 with the 245 highway tires... ~23 mpg was the best I could do with these new AT 265s.

With regular driving ~75 mph and normal acceleration I'm experiencing ~1.5 - 2 mpg hit.

I've decided to go with the Yokohama Geolander G015 but still not sure about which size. leaning toward the 245's for mpg and 265 for looks.

You can't look at your wheels and drive at the same time. Which are you going to do more of?

Appears to be a fairly light AT in the SL. Assuming you're going for the 16" standard load there's only a 3lb difference between 245 and 265. You're the one paying the bills... but I don't think you'll regret the 265s each time you walk up to your truck.

Here's the difference between my factory Firestone Destinations in 245/75/16 (on factory 16x7 steelies) and my Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrains in 265/75/16s (on aftermarket 16x8 rims).

I'm not sure why the difference looks so much less than the difference seen in the pic Gen3TacomaOBX posted, other than perhaps the rim issue - since my aftermarket rim my 265 AT is mounted on is one inch wider than my factory rims. Maybe that's affecting the tire's shape/height a bit? I'm assuming if I had put my 265/75/16 ATs on another 16x7 rim just like my factory tires they probably would be squeezed more and therefore poke up a little taller? Not sure if that's really how it works. Wondering if the 265 AT in your pic @Gen3TacomaOBX is on a rim and if so is it the same size as the factory rim, or if it's possibly standing unmounted?

In any case I didn't lose any gas mileage making this change, and seem to have possibly gained about 1mpg but not certain on that. My results may be unique though, since I swapped the heavy factory steelies for my lighter alloy aftermarket wheels at the same time as the tires, and that may have cancelled out any potential decreased mpg caused by the tires. My ATs are also only SL rated so they aren't exact the heaviest tires. I'm glad I upsized in terms of looks and function, and I was thrilled I didn't lose any mpg but I know some people do.

The tire comparison picture was taken with the 265 tire mounted on Toyota OEM SR5 wheels seen in 'after' pic. Also the new tire had no weight on it.. the 245 was mounted on the truck so half of the front-end was being supported by it.

I'm guessing what appears to be a massive difference in size is due partially to camera angle and my 245s were probably low on air (meanwhile Sam's inflated the new tires to ~40 lb.) I do feel like they are a solid 1.25" taller in size.

Your pictures were taken at a better angle (straight on) for the comparison.

Just to clarify, if I went with the 265/75/16 instead of the '70' aspect ratio on stock suspension and stock wheels, would there be any clearance issues or running?

    Rubbing? nope.

But still wide compared to 215/85r16's that are very close to the dia. of the 245s. Bonus for same weight as a 245 p rated tire. 235's are great, but will change gearing. I too love the look of skinnier tires, but appreciate that not everyone feels that way. I realllllly noticed the reduction in unsprung weight, especially vs. my BFG KO's

    Hi all,
I am looking at new tires as well. I have a stock SR5 2022. I have the 245/75/16’s currently and I have been looking into the 265/75/16 Wildpeak at3 or at4. Is there rubbing with the 265? I have seen some posts about needing to remove the mud flaps. I really would like to keep the mud flaps my truck. I haven’t seen what the 245/75/16 in this tire or really any other at looks like on the truck. Any advice or pictures?

Absolutely no rubbing. Welcome to TW. This has been covered in hundreds of threads.. do a few different searches on tires and you'll see many pictures of similar 265/75/16s. There's a before an after in my photo album fwiw.

I do not have mudflaps but cannot imagine how they'd get in the way of 265/75/16s. This sounds like an issue of 285s or possibly some aftermarket wheel offsets <shrug>.

Edited: Hah.. I see this same thread is where I originally posted by before and after.

thanks for the reply. I have done searches but I haven’t had any luck seeing a 245/75/16 at. I did see you had before and after pictures but you went up to a 265. The dealer I spoke with sounded like there could be an issue but most of what I have seen say it’s fine to go to a 265.

You're welcome. I'm guessing the dealer is just doing stock number matching.

    Here's a good thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/post-your-265-75-16s.493583/

On a related note some of the big tire chains won't install tires that aren't listed as a stock size... in this case I simply remove the wheels and take them to the tire shop for install/balancing.
