    Hey all,

First time truck buyer here, finding myself saying "damn wish i had a truck for ___" so i've decided i'm getting one. 4th gen tacoma looks really appealing minus the price tag. I don't need to do any off-roading, but will likely end up doing some minor towing (under 3000 lbs). Tech is valued for me (controversial for some). Basic uses for the truck are, being a homeowner, and towing a recently inherited boat.

My budget is ~45k due to my current car being paid off, looking for pro's con's if yall have them, or just general thoughts. I'm leaning towards the TRD sport w/ hybrid whenever that comes out, but i think that will break my 45k number. My main thoughts are between the Chevy Colorado LT fully loaded, or the Z71 w/ a few features. Obviously if I can stay below 45k i'd be happier, but also trying to be realistic.

    Thanks all!

Non hybrid 4x4 Sport is already at your budget ceiling at over 44k with no upgrades. No power slider, no power seats, nothing.

    Enjoy your GM truck lol.

If you skip 4wd you get some room for upgrades, but I can't see the hybrid fitting in @45k if it is even available on a base Sport to begin with. Or allocated.

You can get a nicely equipped Z71 for around 45k. I have been looking there myself.

I'm seeing ZR2 Colorado trucks being advertised at $45,000 for a base ZR2 and $49,000-51,000 loaded with everything but the Desert Boss package. If it's me I'm going loaded ZR2 and expanding the budget $5k.

Guessing the Hybrid is most likely going to be part of some expensive option packages and not a stand alone option.

TFL cringe posted a video about the Chevy 24 configurator being up. ZR2 is @ 60K. Have not verified cause not really interested. And didn't really watch the entire video, well for reasons. YMMV.

Sounds like them being click bait unfortunately. Just did a 2024 and loaded with everything sans Desert Boss was $52,675. Still starts at $46,800 before D&D.

Gonna depend on what packages/options you must have ... but 2024 ZR2 4WD starts under $50K. You can probably find 2023's under MSRP. The Colorado and the GMC Canyon, worth a look for sure.

Yeah I was able to load up a Z71 w/ Convenience package 3 + safety/tech packages and come out to 44,835, which seemed like a really good number. I know Tacomas have historically been bulletproof, but it seems like the price is just simply too high. I take it mixed reviews on if they'll come down after all the fuss/drama of new ones being out?

The hybrid is going to be expensive and it will be a while before you can get it.

Unfavorable third-rail option: sell your paid-off car and buy the cheapest Rivian you can find. Tons of tech. Can tow. Fast.

Or! Do you have land? For the new boat? You could also consider an SUV or some type of car that can tow 5,000 lbs. and the purchase of a small trailer for light duty hauling. Keep the smaller trailer next to the boat. One drive to rule them all.

I saw a review on the Colorado, and if I recall it was a TrailBoss. Any way the interior plastics looked like typical GM plastics. If that's a concern, I could live with it!

The trail boss is a WT with a lift. Many feature and interior changes between that and a zr2

I wasn't sure if those were the only interior materials availabele. This was a Motorweek review, all the other truck interiors looked nicer on youtube, and w hff at ever photos I've seen.

OP mentioned Z71, not ZR2 lol. Someone (correctly) posted the close proximity of a ZR2, and well here we are.

24 Tacoma is essentially all new. Past "reliability" should not weigh heavily on your decision here IMO. If anything, the 2.7 in the GM twins is more proven than the new Taco motor in this application. Also the 2.7 is more powerful.

Z71 and trail boss suspension is also a significant downgrade from the tacoma OR. So the comparisons get a little muddy

and no locker, which few need but lots of us
    like to pretend is important

If the new taco sport has highway manners and performance that are half as good as the new colorados that I have driven..I'll be happy.
