My new Tacoma seems to have what sounds like valve chatter or rattle. Taken to 2 different dealerships and was told that it is normal but it doesn’t sound normal ticking tapping from the direct injectors like my 3rd gen did. I filed a complaint with corporate and they are supposed to be reaching out to a “field engineer “ we will see. Anyone else experiencing this ? I hear it from 0 to about 40. 1st through third gear.

Does it run a cleaning cycle the way the 3rd Gens do?

From what I gather they changed the injectors themselves and the programming for injector cleaning has been done away with according to TCCN.

It's just a noisy engine and not in a good way. I think what you are hearing is the high pressure fuel rail that is exposed and sitting on the passenger side near the top of the engine. That and injector clatter. Mine makes the same noises in the same speed range that you are describing.

Yeah I’m hoping that’s all it is. Other than that it drives great and has plenty of torque and power. I guess the injector noise and fuel rail would make sense considering I’ve tried premium top tier gas from different stations and it’s made 0 difference. Thanks for your input at least I’m not the only one experiencing this.

Normal sewing machine clatter, ive heard it in many utube videos as they were posting offroad videos...
Along with I hear it in my own truck...
Been a ford tech for 35 years, common characteristic of these new complex engines.
    Drive-on...

The videos I’m referring to or not pointing out the noise, just various content creators run in the trucks, it’s obvious if you know what you’re listening for within the video under certain conditions, the videos were not about pointing out the noise once again

I wouldn't say mine has a clatter, but when it's cold it definitely sounds diesel like starting up and taking off down the road first thing in the morning :notsure:

I had another direct injection turbo 4 engine before and it was very, very similar sounding.

First off, don’t have much faith in the field engineer and secondly be ready to be told it’s normal. Much like the 3rd gen the 4th gen will most likely follow in its foot steps with every complaint being normal.

I don't know if this site allows you to upload video files. They probably don't to cut down on storage space use. You can however upload them to YouTube then just provide a link to it there.

Mine does it in the same speed range. To me it sounds like spark knock...but i think its normal.

Wow, that sounds like crap. Another solid reason to never buy a new model year. They always push these new designs out the door before they’re ready. So many bugs, so many recalls, so many issues.

I hope the field service rep takes care of you. Please let us know what you hear from them.

That’s the first thought that came to mind. Call me crazy but I don’t even run 87 in my lawnmower.

Well, that noise doesn't inspire confidence.

Yeah my thoughts exactly but I’ve ran premium fuel for several tanks with top tier fuel and it’s made no difference. Idk how this could be normal to Toyota
