I had an old truck with the famous 22R known for its reliability.

I recently bought a 2003 Tacoma base truck with the 2.4 liter.

I got about 31 mpg with the 22R with a manual tranny and get about the same in the Tacoma with an automatic tranny (70% hwy driving). I drive like an old man in order to conserve fuel.

What are the pros and cons of each engine?

    How does the reliability compare?

you got 32mpgs with a 22r? Fuck..haha i have had two 22re's and only got like 15 in town and maybe 20 hwy..

they are both pretty reliable. Can't beat either really.

but the 22r is freaking ridiculously reliable. I don't think there is a better motor out there really..

2.4 liter tacoma is a 2WD and his last truck probably was too. I've had lots of 22R's and 22RE's and they are dead reliable as long as the timing chain guides don't go. The new ones are just as reliable IMO and make more power. As many fond memories I have about 22RE powered trucks of my younger days whenever I drive one I can't believe how gutless they are. Especially with larger tires. My 89 with 31's on it is really slow. But all it has to do now is plow my driveway and I can't seem to kill it.

My 79 Celica had 375,000km+ on the 22R when I sold it and my 85 Celica had 300,000km+ on the 22RE when I sold it. Super solid motor.

How can you get so much mpg? I can never get more than 28 on my 04 2rz. Factory tires and nothing but a aluminum topper.

yes, both were base model 2wd trucks.

I get over 30 mpg by taking it easy when I accelerate, try not to hit the brakes etc. I bet if I raced to every stoplight it would be below 25 mpg, but I can't afford to do that anymore. :D

These are real world mileage figures. I bet others have also got this type of gas mileage.

yep, I'd rather have a slow vehicle that always makes it to your destination, than a fast one that habitually breaks down.

you think the 22R with an auto is slow? try driving an old Mercedes 240D (diesel) with an automatic....always got me to where I was going though, and never left me stranded.

ours was almost indestrucable. Building it was in burned down and that killed it..but drove it with no fan belt once..still fine..no oil for lord knows how long..still fine..was awesome haha loved that truck. Got an 87 5speed after that. Felt way more powerful with the 5 speed.
