I think it’s more of a removable dash speaker that you can carry back to the tailgate. I don’t know, I’ve seen stupider things. Just make sure you park next to a new Colorado with the cooler in the tailgate and have a party!!

And remember while your driving 60 mph plus playing with your display screen, removable dash speaker could suddenly pop out of holder and block your driving vision, just as a Semi comes roaring by.

One now has to wonder if car thieves now will see removable dash speaker as easy targets???

I think that the point of having it in the dash is it will be integrated with the car stereo (I am guessing) so it is basically the center speaker in the dash. My 2021 currently has 2 speakers on each side in the hot dashboard and that is never a problem. I am sure they tested the design and found the batteries have no issues with the top baking in the sun. Yeah it is a gimmick, but I have seen worse (like the chilled glove compartments for drinks that I think I remember seeing in Dodges a while ago for example). For the Tacoma "lifestyle" it could be a cool gimmick for a lot of people.

I agree, feels gimicky to me too... if you lose the speaker, or it gets stolen, you have a hole in your dash and your sound system.

^I bet that space will be a useful storage cubby on lower trims.
You're a few hours late. I do agree it's dumb. Toyota is doing this while the Bronco gets an accessory rail and USB ports in that location for mounting your phones, tablets, GPS, radio mic...

And GMC has had actual speakers built into the tailgate, though they aren't portable.

Another addition for people to say the JBL sounds like crap and won't be able to upgrade.

Sun damage will ruin it in a year being on the dash. Kinda pointless
