Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere, but I have been trying to research everything on the turbo side of the new Tacoma's. I currently have a 2023 Taco SR access cab with the 2.7 and having gotten it in DEC 2023 with 12 miles , I am currently sitting at OCT 2024 with 1850 miles ( I am lucky , I walk to work ) but wanted a brand new Truck that was "bullet proof".

Anyways , IF I decided to go turbo and get a 2024 or newer one day , what would letting a turbo sit and only driven say 5000 miles or less a year have on it ? I know it is probably not good to let anything sit and would be better to drive it everyday, but is it worst on a turbo than a N/A engine ?

    Thanks for any input.

It will be fine. You are averaging 13+ miles a day.

    Turbos have changed a lot.

    It's also a Toyota.

You’d definitely want to drive it every couple of weeks though.

I have 58K miles on my 3rd Gen and no problems. With the low miles you drive, in the year 2055 you might reach my mileage and can hopefully say the same.

I had a '99 Audi with 240k on it and the original turbo. It depends on a lot of things, but it's not a big deal. Regular oil changes and making sure to do a little cooldown procedure for the turbo if you flog it seems to be key. There's a procedure in the manual. I seem to recall that they just want you to sit and idle for a couple minutes after you run it hard or if you do a longer jaunt on the highway and don't have some easier driving in between. Basically, if you ride her hard, give her a minute to dry off so she doesn't get put away wet.

Small displacement turbocharged engines are really common now and really have been for a while. There's plenty of people out there who haven't the slightest idea and treat them just like any other thing they'd drive. They do fine.

can you reference in the owners manual where it says to idle engine after hard driving/highway driving?

This is generally every turbo ever. Some fancy cars have the idle built in if I’m not mistaken. Like when you shut the car off the fan stays on for a few minutes.

Oh man...you brought up that topic! It is in the manual....basically when hauling ass do not come to an immediate stop and kill engine....you must idle for 1 min before you do that. Last topic on this people were freaking out that they would have to do this after driving on the freeway and could not grasp that you exit the freeway and go park somewhere and those actions are below the speed and time needed for the cooldown.

Here is one of the threads. And a photo I had saved....I think it is from the Tundra manual but there is the same one in the Tacoma manual.

There's probably cars with turbo timers built in. I remember reading someplace that BMW or VW will run the electric water pump for a little while after the car is shut off to cool the turbo if need be. Not quite the same as keeping the engine running for a bit, but the effect is the same. As I'm to understand it, it's more common nowadays to design the cooling system such that a hot turbocharger will generate passive flow in the coolant system when the pump isn't running such that it cools itself quickly.

Timers used to be a bigger thing before water cooled turbos were as common. That and for the Fast and the Furious crowd to flex with. Apparently, turbo timers were sexy or something. Not sure. Never ran with that crowd.
