Hi guys, I recently was able to score locally a 14 inch limited JBL radio display for my SR5 (have the 8 inch JBL version) and wanted to do the conversion. I went ahead and swap the unit and everything is plug and play.

Except for the small incovenience that I dont have on my SR5 the Volume Knob located on the middle of the AC vents. neither do I have the plug/wiring that goes behind it and all the way to the back of the radio display (already check several times), but at least Im able to control the volume from the steering wheel.

    I was able to purchase:
    • on Ebay a used vent that has the volume module/Knob.
    • A used plug from a 23 Tundra that goes behind the volume module.
    • and also pins/connectors from AliExpress so I can plug them behind the radio display harness.

(however I think the color of the wires from the used plug from the 23 Tundra, are different on the Tacoma).

My questions is: Could any of you that have the 14 inch radio display please snap a picture of your wire/pins harness of your volume module (behind the AC vents) and also a picture of were do they connect behind your radio display? that would help me A LOT to be able to connect the used plug to the correct location.

Or even the radio diagram? I searched for radio wiring diagram but couldnt find any information.

Any help is appreciate it. thanks.

so what your saying is you were able to swap a 14" into your truck that had an 8" and all you needed was the screen? all connectors plugged in and worked and the only thing that didnt work was the radio volume knob because it wasnt there?
if this is true could you post pics of exactly how it went?

Hi, unfortunately didn’t take pics of the process when swapping the screen. but in my case since the truck has the JBL version the wiring harness was the same. It was just a matter of disconnecting the 8-inch screen wire plugs and then plugging them into the 14-inch screen. (for the removal of the screen, I followed a video from YouTube, its easy).

I did forget to add that I had to also buy:
    • from eBay a used odometer/Engine start button housing/cover (so the screen can fit besides the Engine start button) below pic.
    • And the screen top cover for the bigger 14-inch screen. from a Toyota online parts website. (55405-AK020) below pic.
And thanks to the diagram that was provided by caribe makaira on this post I will be able to start the process of installing the volume knob. I’ll let you guys know how it goes.

For the missing terminal on the Head Unit connector (Gray) you could wedge a trimmed wire then glue it place and tape to wire next to it.
If the wires are present in the other connector (Black) you could use posi-taps.

Hey man this is awesome stuff. I’ve been trying to get my screen upgraded for weeks and have had no luck. Just checking if everything has been smooth for you since you replaced it?

Hi All, yes everything went great, at the end the pins/connectors that I bought didn’t fit behind the radio original plugs,
so, I just ended up buying two harnesses adapters (28-pin from Amazon/30-pin from AliExpress) and I just tapped into those wires to make the radio volume knob work and went great.

almost forgot, I also bought the white plug/conector and other stuff below needed for the volume knob control, (bought the white connector since the used one I had from a Tundra had different pin locations. heres the link:

    White plug connector 90980-12551:

Terminal/pins that goes behind the white connector 90980-12551:

Wire: (I bought white color but can choose color of your choice)

    Crimping tool:

As a note: only thing I did different was tapping from the 28-pin connector/harness the Power/12V Positive ignition switch (pin 15) and the Ground (pin 1). Below images.

Great job job doing this conversion.. I’m sure it will be a popular choice for ones wanting the larger screen

    Now,
Someone just figure out how to tap the video feeds and set up SD recording of all the cameras positions (like sentry mode on a Tesla)

@veltap, did you test the feed from pin 13 on J33? I ask because I see your pic identifying pin 15 as your choice for fused ignition to switch.

    I wonder if the non-JBL 8” SR5 would be a similar install.

Can you let me know where you found the youtube video to remove the screen? I've searched in vain. I want to route some cable behind the screen, down to the centre console below, and to a ham radio under the back seat. Removing, or pulling the screen forward a small distance would be helpful, I think.

Yes! (though I think Tesla's have 8 cameras)
And (for premium models with MTM and/or PVM) to have the right mirror camera feed pop up on the screen while driving, when you activate the right turn signal to change lanes, and likewise for the left (like in some Kia and Hyundai vehicles).

And to change the setting for the cutoff speed where it disables the camera display to at least 15-20 mph (I believe they are active at all speeds on some Tesla models).

And to allow you to pan and rotate the 360 view by swiping your finger on the screen (also like some Kia and Hyundai vehicles).

And to allow bed view to stay on while driving, until you turn it off (I believe Ford pickups allow this).
