Anyone know why the towing capacity is so much less on the SR even configured the same as the sport?

It gets the detuned engine 243 vs 317 tq.

Base SRs always had a towing capacity of 3500 lbs.

Yeah this crossed my mind but all < 2024 have leafs and can tow over 5k. I’m hoping this is some kind of typo but I’m not sure how to verify. Dealers will just bullshit me.

Oh missed that. It is probably the same, they just don’t have it listed.

They did the same with the 3rd Gen comparing 4 Cyl vs 6 Cyl SRs. My SR V6 was listed having only 3500 lbs towing on the website, but the door sticker says 6700.

If not a typo then it's most likely some attempted up-sale BS.

In one of the videos with the chief engineer, similar to the base Colorado, there are some mechanical differences in addition to the lower tune. I can't find the video, but I think there is less cooling and fewer friction plates in the transmission.

The manual trans doesn’t get the detuned engine though. (I missed it listed in the OPs original post, not enough coffee on board yet)

Worth noting that an xtracab has leafs and states it can tow 6500… Can’t really trust all this new info until door stickers are available

I'm definitely looking forward to getting more details as to the mechanical differences and hope this isn't just a software cripple to up-sell models. That doesn't sound very Toyota of them.

Yeah it is at 310 vs 317 tq. Shouldn’t really affect towing capacity though. Guessing a typo or the configurator isnt fully up to date. Still not showing a pic of the DCLB when I try to build a SR5, nor will it show the XtraCab building a SR.

Thanks for all the input. Yeah my gut is this is just a typo on the site. Looking forward to verifying this though because the SR with MT is a decent value in my opinion esp since I don’t care about all the extra tech.

I also heard one of the engineers saying it had to do with engine cooling on the detuned engine.

Lack of oil coolers on the 8AT models, the 6MT should be the same for SR and higher.

The SR probably do not have a tow package. That would include things like the class-IV receiver hitch, Oil and transmission coolers, power steering cooler, bigger alternator, 4/7pin wiring, etc.

How would Toyota support a 640 lb tongue weight and 3500lb towing capacity without some sort of tow package on the SR? I could possibly see them leaving off an additional oil cooler which I believe happened to all models of the 3rd gen halfway through production.

Just checked the online specs again and they updated the SR MT to show a 6,400 lb towing capacity so mystery solved.

The cheat code for cost savings is the 4x4 SR MT. You get the higher output engine, high tow rating, and towing package as standard…. Plus the SR5 alloy wheels are included in this configuration versus the steel wheels.

the MT on 3rd gens were slightly cheaper versus AT so maybe that’s why Toyota added a few extras since they kept the msrp the same on the 4th gen trans…. very odd.

the only thing I’m bummed about is the lack of standard sliding rear window on dbcb SR but that can be added aftermarket without too much cost. Apparently even the double cab SR5 doesn’t have a slider either. This used to be standard on 23 SR dbcb
