Hello everyone! I'm in the market for a new 2024 tacoma with a tight budget. I only really have 3 requirements from the truck that I want to buy:

    - 4x4
    - Crew Cab
    - Long-lasting

I've been looking at a few other options (i.e. the ford maverick) but it is not uncommon to see those trucks with a ton of reliability issues.

I have a toyota dealership nearby with an SR model (Upgrade package, 4x4) and a SR5 (Base model 4x4) with the prices about 2k apart. The SR model is a closer to my price range and currently the truck I'm thinking about getting, but in my research, I've noticed that it has a detuned engine, and that it may potentially use cheaper parts than the other models. Is this something that I should be concerned about in the long run? How much more sluggish is the engine in the SR model feel? I plan on driving this truck until the wheels fall off so I want to make the right choice!

First model year has teething pains. YMMV. You really need to test drive one de tuned SR and one SR5. Go from there.

Go drive them back to back and that should take care of which one will work for you in regards to HP and TQ. Keep in mind that the SR has leaf springs and the SR5 will have coils. If you can swing the extra $2k then you might be better off in the long run...might not. Also look at the pinned thread on what people are paying to give you an idea of where you will be at after negotiating.

Are you likely to be doing any towing.? The SR automatic has limited towing capacity (about 3500lb if I remember correctly).

I won't be doing a lot of towing... but I'll be hauling a lot of stuff in the bed. I do a ton of camping, and I travel a lot - sometimes off-road

Spend the extra $2k and get the SR5 with the higher output engine.

That’s the same use for the new Tacoma I’m looking for.
With the bed full of gear and water its normally 600 to 800 pounds, camper shell included.
My truck was lacking for power when loaded and in the mountains. Freeway onramps could be challenging.

    Drove a 97 V6 for 24 years.

I’m getting the SR5 for sure. No need to even think about it.
Extra cab, 6 foot bed. If they ever make them available….
