This sounds different than typical injector and high pressure fuel pump noise I'm used to in these engines - listen for tapping noise in this video. Goes away when fully warmed up but occurs more now at cold start or when restarted after brief off when warm. Goes away once fully warmed up - sounds like excess piston slap or hydraulic valve lash adjuster issue.

Idk, what it could be, but it does sound like something else is intermittently going on.

Sounds like normal injector cleaning cycle to me.

All of these trucks make weird noises, you've got a warranty and it's a Toyota, so just drive it. It'll be fine. If I posted every weird noise my truck has made I would have thousands of posts.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

The engine in this truck is the loudest I have ever owned -- including the $100 jobs of my youth, it would be less irritating if it weren't the most expensive thing on wheels I have ever purchased...

That said, I'm at 56,000 miles, the truck runs fine and the odd noises haven't gotten any louder. :notsure:

I tell people it is a prototype diesel I'm testing for Toyota.

my 23 makes the same noise sometimes. The last Silverado I owned did it too. GM told me it's thin aluminum heat shields on the exhaust manifolds expanding as the truck warms up. That's why its random and only does is partly through the warmup cycle.

Lifter issues that cause noise usually happen on cold start or fully warmed up.

These motors are sensitive. If there was a lifter issue you would know it. Truck would run like shit and most likely set a CEL.

The Silverado was real loud when it did it. It would do it about 1 minute after starting it.

    It’s normal . Totally .
Erase in your brain what we know of past motors.
Also remember an aluminum motor in general is more noisy than cast iron .

Dude that’s funny because I always laugh when people say they can hear a specific noise. I usually can’t hear anything since my truck is so loud and it runs just fine.

I like the way it sounds. Tap-tap-tap… With the single stage black paint, my SR reminds me of our old’67 Dodge with the Slant-6. It fits the personality of the truck. ECT power in Sport -3. Bouncing all over the road. Duratracs drowning out my Fu Manchu… All the while getting 18 mpg! I don’t remember ever enjoying a vehicle more.

Toyota tick, like a fine old Singer sewing machine. Every toy I owned had it, it will rust away before it’s ever a concern, at least in the northeast anyway..

When I compare my truck to the noise the cam chain tensioner makes on my motorcycle the truck is a mere whisper

I get the tap tap tap, but hear an intermittent clicking sound in the op's engine, I don't have in mine. On 2nd thought listening to it again, I think it's the op moving his phone around, otherwise normal.

Mine does the separate noise you're talking about. Start your truck cold and listen outside near the drive side front wheel well. Give it a while, let the truck fully warm up. You might hear it. My 2018 work truck and new 23 do it.
