Traded in my 2021 Trail Boss for a 2023 TRD Off Road (to save money). Sorta regretting so far...

Ride home, I noticed that the ride was rough and bouncy on the interstate. Now at 700 miles and it is still occurring 45+ on the highways. Brought it to local dealer (not where I bought it), and she said it is because I have off road tires, and it is normal to bounce. I had a 2021 TRD Off Road prior to the Trail Boss (traded due to hurricane Ida damage) and I didn't have this bounce. It is the same exact truck.

I called my salesman (100 miles away) and he said he hasn't heard of this issue... of course, right?

I am considering spending the $90 to take it to a private mechanic to do a balance. Anyone having these issues on new trucks?

I had a new Tacoma back in 2019 and it had a bad wheel they had to replace because it wouldn't balance, so I am not new to this issue.

Might need to adjust your tire pressure. Take a close up pic of the tire and I can tell you what to run. Unbalanced tires will make the truck shaky, but won’t hurt or help the ride quality on bumps. “Bouncy” ride can be interpreted a few ways. The TRD offroad has a soft suspension that can often be bouncy feeling, but mostly comfortable and not harsh. The TRD sport has a very stiff ride that can be harsh but some like it. Bouncy jives with the offroad’s traits but bouncy and harsh don’t mean the same thing.

If it’s harsh, then it’s probably the tire pressure. I wouldn’t take it to a private mechanic until at least the air pressure is investigated. I couldn’t ask for any different ride quality than how my TRD OR is, I love the way it rides.

Pressure is 30psi. It's the stock Goodyear Wranglers.

I feel all my tacomas 15, 18 and now a 23 all are VERY sensitive to road imperfections. Many roads tend to have dips in them that create this bounce. But it should come and go. There is a certain stretch of highway that all 3 of my trucks would sort of bounce on but then go away after the road smoothed. The bounce shouldn't be constant though.

What tire pressure are you running?

Even though you purchased the truck from another dealer, any other dealer should be able try and rectify this issue for you. I would ask your local dealer again to look at the truck. If they give you a hard time give Toyota a call and they will help piggy back the diag and reach out the the local dealer.

Well, pressure checks out then. Did you buy this brand new or lightly used?

Brand new. Bought it before they even washed the rail dust off.

Anyone have experience talking with Toyota Corporate to get issues resolved? Service Manager is supposed to call me back today since the service advisor told me the bounce is normal for off road tires. If they continue to push that agenda, I will need to figure out a different route.

    Yeah.
When you say "bounce," is it a regular vibrating bounce, or just random bouncing? You might just try putting a little weight in the bed. The stock Goodyears are passenger tires with an off-roady tread, not like E-rated tires.

The off road has a softer suspension than others.

30 PSI is less than I run in my tires. I'd try 35 PSI and see what happens.

There can be a HUGE difference in tires and how they ride. Even in the same size, load rating, and with similar tread.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Put some weight in the bed like @TenBeers suggested and it will ride like a Cadillac. Preload I think is what they call it.

Put some weight in the bed (like 500 lbs) and report back.

Unladed mine will have a little bounce to it, the nature of a rear leaf sprung truck. Loaded it goes away. Really depends on the road surface, some are worse than others.

It was better with the cheap stock P rated tires, greater the ply’s the more it will amplify the bounce.

It is after all a truck, my 3G is probably the smoothest riding one I have owned yet. Not perfect, but it is pretty good. Now the old ones, ‘85 and older that were fully leaf sprung…those things bounced.

My offroad used to bounce all over the road, it was a long bed and the wheelbase caused a rocking on some roads due to "waves" in the pavement. This was fixed by replacing the stock shocks with larger better shocks. Other people with similar trucks didnt have the same issue, but they all had short beds.

Yep, seems 10 out of 10 times there's way to much tire pressure these trucks are sent out as.

When I say bounce, it's not bouncing around from bumps. It's a consistent bouncing/vibrations of the tires.

Have heard of cases where the rims were slightly out of balance, (not a wheel weight issue, but the rim itself) replacing the whole wheel was the cure.

Yes, that happened on my 2021 Tacoma OR I had. Drove it home from the dealer and had similar issues. They took the wheels off, tried to balance, and couldn't balance one of them. Replaced the entire rim. Fixed the problem.

The TRDOR recommends 30 PSI when cold. Going above that when cold will cause vibration issues and poor wear....ask me how I know...
