Looking to upgrade the speakers in my SR. Don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. Would like a good sound upgrade for a good price. I won’t be adding a stereo or amp or anything like that. I was looking on crutchfield but want to make sure the speakers will all sound the same. I’d also like a fairly plug and play. Any recommendations on what to buy and any additional parts needed?

Without knowing your listening habits or music tastes, I’ll offer a generic answer.

Look for speakers with a high sensitivity, like 92+ db. As well, the lower amount of power to them needed the better, ideally 30watts or less.

Without changing the headunit or getting an amp, the benefits of swapping speakers will be minimal.

*edit*. I forgot. Going www.Crutchfield.com with your purchase will net you all the adapters you need to make install plug-n-play.

I went with the Kicked/Subaru tweeter upgrade which was plug and play. I also replaced the front door speakers with Kicker KS 6x9 coax and that made a big difference. I replaced the rear with KS 6.75 coax and it was a waste of money. There is not enough power to the rear. I kept the factory head unit and did not use an amp. I guess amping the rear would made a huge difference.

I agree with everything but the “minimal” point. The stock speakers are woeful at best and cups with a string would be better.

i'll give you $100 if you can get cups and a string to have as much bass as the oem speakers in the doors...

Seriously thou the oem speakers are as cheap as it gets. When there is so much better out there. And I listen to talk radio mostly. So I don’t even have a dog in this hunt. But I will be throwing in a sub amp with my speaker swap. More to your point.

This is the truth. I swapped all of mine before swapping the head unit, and it was negligible.
The beauty of a cup and string is it doesn’t take much power to do what it does. Same with the stock speakers. The power requirements on the stock speakers is minimal, which is good because the power from the stock headunit is minimal to match.

While anecdotal, I can say in experience, swapping the speakers only yields less than exciting results. While there is some benefit, it isn’t much. If you really want it to sound better, a headunit (or at least an amp) is going to be best.

Absolutely even stock yoda head units carry more umpf than most base radios offered by competitors. But what a swap does do is open up instruments never even heard of, because of the lack of quality if you will.

no string, and uses a coil of copper and a magnet instead that was not mentioned in the specifications initially agreed to.

    now for my fun ;)
because the coil is connected to the bottom of the cup, and doesn't match the size of the magnet, it makes for an extremely large magnetic gap which drops the efficiency of the motor structure significantly. also, the magnet is hand-held which will accidently dampen it's reactive force. the bottom of the cup is acting as the speaker spider and the speaker cone, but is inherently limited to maybe 1mm xmax peak-to-peak due to the limitations of the spider and cone overall size and limited flexibility. unfortunately the sides of the cup are only acting to horn-load the speaker assembly on the bottom, but due to the flexible nature of human hands, hand-holding this assembly will also dampen some of the frequency response due to the limited motion available to the spider/cone assembly

the horn loaded assembly will offer some benefits that will counteract some of the loss of motor efficiency in terms of signal efficiency, but the limitations of the overall cone size and limited xmax mean an inherently high fs.

    but i do have paypal.

they're really cheap and made to a cost, but by far not even close to the cheapest speakers i've seen installed in vehicles. they're actually really decent assemblies compared to the speakers that came in vehicles in the 1980's and earlier.

I have speakers on order with proper sound deadening to enhance whatever speakers are used will be an improvement. That’s the bottom line here. I have some foam wrap. ( used for window a/c units that will seal the gap between the speakers and door panels) I’m hoping that will help as well.
