I have a 2022 with about 2,500 miles on it now.I love the truck except the automatic tranny shifting into over drive at like way to soon to me?It seems like the tranny works itself to death shifting up and down, kinda of annoying at times!Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem or is this something I have to get use to and deal with?

Gear hunting is a usual for our power trains, if you search around you'll find endless threads about it.

A tune like OVTune or KDMAX, etc., tend to help

It'll calm down a little once it learns your driving habits but you'll eventually need a tune to make it chill out completely.

Have you given it enough time to learn your driving habits?...might take a few thousand miles for some. Try to resist using the ECT and S modes as much as possible.

Give it time, all computerized trannys learn their shift points from your driving habits. It will get better

Have the dealer perform TSB 0062-18. Tell them that when you accelerate on the freeway to pass another vehicle or throttle from a dead stop at an intersection, the truck hesitates for a second or two causing a loss of power while it hunts for gears. This is a legitimate safety concern. After the TSB is done, it'll drive like a completely different truck, i.e. the way it's supposed to.

They might tell you that the engine is still "learning" and to wait, but after 5k of "learning," enough is enough and demand the TSB.

slap it in s4 if you are in a 45 mph or under zone. keep it in s5 unless you are on the freeway. this limits the annoying upshifts into the overdrive gears. you can press the ECT button as well.

if you are still not satisfied, and you have a v6, you can look into a tune.

Thats exactly what not to do when the transmission is still in the learning stage.....you don't want your transmission to grow up stupid.

The TSB does not apply to the newer trucks, they already have the latest software version...

'16+ tacomas come out like that from the factory... all you do is drive some more miles so it will learn your driving habits. It will get better over the time.

Just like a baby born and doesn't walk until he grows up little then learns to walk..

That's why Tacomas have different transmission.. which is different from 2nd gen... If you drive a 2nd gen, it's ready to drive... no learning needed.

It's normal for this 4-speed automatic with 3 overdrives to do that when you are luging low rpms.

This affects even big commercial trucks too. I drive package cars with the 6.0 GM V8 and 5 speed Allison. The older trucks up to 2018 were fast and torquey. The new 2019 trucks have a crappy tune that lugs the engine in 2nd at low speed and upshifts as fast possible, it forces the engine to accelerate in 4th trying to get on the freeway and knocks when ever you lightly press the accelerator. Also, there is a weird phenomenon. The engines will chug and then stall if you press the gas too quickly on a morning cold start.

Actually give it the gas. It will then be normal.
You baby it, it will hunt. You drive it, it works just fine.
It does not shift off rpm, it shifts when you don't ask for power.

The EPA didn't engineer the truck, Toyota just did a bad job with the 3rd gen's powertrain. No other modern truck has this issue yet they all are subject to the same regulations. If you drive an 8 speed Camry, its transmission tune is awful as well. I could pick any "ZF 8 Speed" in a BMW car or a Ram truck and they will show how bad Toyota's tunes are

OP: The quickest and cheapest fix is clicking your ECT button, it will help slightly
